Queue Bug?

Please test this. If you think it is a bug, please email Malfador.

Start a new game and delete two Research Centers from your homeworld. You should now have two free facility slots.

Put Research Center in the queue twice and click Repeat Build.

The game will build two Research Centers, detect that the planet is full and remove Research Center from the queue (just the top one.)

Every turn afterward, the game fails to detect that the planet is full and continually wastes resources trying to build the Research Center.

The solution: The game should remove all facilities from the queue once the planet is full.

(Currently, it just removes the top one.)

((Granted, this is a pretty rare situation.))

A bug, though an odd unusual one. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Explain why you're putting more than one item in the que and repeat building again?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Situation: You establish a colony in hostile space.

The first thing you do is repeat build defensive fighters.

Once the planet appears to be well defended, you clear the queue and select the facilities you want built. For example, you have five slots. So, you select:

Research Center
Research Center
Research Center
Research Center
Research Center

Repeat Build was left on from the 'Repeat Build' of the defensive units.

I had to read that one twice. The first time thru, I thought you said that it continued to build research facilities on a full planet!

It does seem to be a bug, but not the biggest or most important by far.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">That is, in fact, what is is doing. The game will continually build research facilities on a full planet.

Malfador has done some AWESOME things to the queue management since the game came out. It is INCREDIBLE that the game will typically check to see if the planet is full and remove the top item from the queue. This is absolutely fantastic. Progress is definitely being made.

Yep. This is a pretty minor bug. Still.... it would be nice if some of the heavy hitters on the board would email Aaron and ask him to add it to the bottom of his list. It is possible that this fix might just take 15 minutes.

The game better not be putting more than the max facilities on a full planet.

Ok, I tested it. The game does NOT put more than the max facilities on a planet. Therefore, minor bug.

At least, I'm making progress. When I started this whole process, I couldn't even get anyone to say there was a bug. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

When you started this, you were complaining about the game repeat building spaceports.
That is definitely NOT a bug, its what you put in the build queue, and it is not the game's job to second guess you.

Having resources evaporate against a facility that cannot complete is a bug, and I fully support fixing that.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Well..... You have convinced me, at least, that the game's bugs aren't as annoying as the folks playing the game. I'm into turn 80 or so of my current game. After listening to all you Malfador brown-nosers, the game's UI seems downright clean.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">That was just uncalled for Raynor. Just because we did not agree with you about repeat building a few extra spaceports being a bug does not mean we are "Malfador brown-nosers".

Multiple spaceports being built is what he was originally complaining about in the first thread.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">No. Actually, I was complaining because the game didn't turn off 'Repeat Build' when I cleared the queue. I had been repeat building units, cleared the queue and then added multiple facilities to the build queue. After 'x' turns, I ended up with three spaceports.

SJ's comment about the game needing to second guess what I'm adding to the queue is nonsensical. I was complaining about the 'Repeat Build' being left on.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">You want the game to second-guess your orders to Repeat Build the top item in the list. The game should probably not be second-guessing poor decisions. Build queues set to Repeat Build are very clearly marked as such, and it is the user's fault entirely if he builds extra things that he did not want to build.

In fact, his post (in the other thread, which this is about) quite clearly has this in it:

Quote:

You start playing the game. You are building defensive WEP's on a planet using 'Repeat Build'. Then, you clear the queue and start building a Space Port. Nine turns later, you realize that you have three Space Ports.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Now please explain to me how this has nothing to do with spaceports?

Re: Queue Bug?

To get back on topic - was there a log message about the research center not being built? I know you get one when building more units than can be stored at a location. I've also noticed that, in that case, the build order is also NOT deleted. I sometimes appreciate that, because sometimes I want all the units built anyway, and either launch enough cargo to store the units I want or move a transport to that location. Of course, sometimes I just forget to check how many weapon platforms I can fit on a small planet; but even then, I may not want the build order deleted because I might be building a newer Version of an old WP, and just forgot to jettison the old one.

Along those same lines, it might be useful to exploit this little feature; for a pure research compound colony, put "Research Center" as the first item in queue and "Central Computer Complex" as the second item. Turn on repeat build; once the planet is full, "Research Center" will be deleted and the CCC will be started. Since that takes multiple turns to build, you should be able to monitor the situation until it's one turn away from completion, then delete a Research Center just in time to make room for the CCC. Voila, you've now had the benefit of an extra Research Center for 5 turns or so, while waiting for the CCC to finish. Takes a little micromanagement, but in a seriously competitive game, every edge helps...

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I was always wondering if the necessary resources are wasted in case of "no storage available" (which happens very often in my chaotic management style). It appears to be the case.

Re: Queue Bug?

he is saying that the planet attempts to build the facility, but then gives him an error message saying something similar to the "Insufficient Storage" log message when you build too many units. This results in wasted resources (they were spent on the facility...)

Fyron February 26th, 2003 08:11 AM

Re: Queue Bug?

No, there is no error message. That is the problem. That, and it wastes resources building a non-existant facility.
