To all my PBW games - Greybeard

Attention: I royally messed up my computer on Saturday. Can't even access the hard drive now after doing an MS-DOS scandisk while upgrading from Win 95 to Win 98SE. I have our company's computer guru helping me, but won't have a computer for SEIV until Wednesday or Thursday at the earliest.

Can my games be put on Last player upload until Thursday? If the problem is worse than expected, I will try to find substitutes or let replacement players take over. I'm currently in Smalluniverse, Networks, Homecoming, Capitals, Furball 4, and Newbie Galactic Combat (I think that's all).

Game hosts can contact me at work, jbakker@allenbrand-drews.com, if you need to discuss anything.

Thanks...Greybeard http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

Update: My data is still on the hard drive. My friend is rescuing everything, and I should be back on line either Friday night or Saturday. Thanks for your patience...Greybeard

Sorry about your computer.
I'll hold the turn until the weekend in NGC2. At sunday Central European Time 12.00 (Lunch time) I'll run the run.
If you haven't uploaded by then you'll propably only miss one turn anyway.

Lession to be learned here.

If you only have one drive... Make sure you partition it.

ANd put all your data on the none OS Partition.

That way you only have to reformat and install the os on the os partiton and everything else is on the other part of the partition.

It gave me the time to catch up on the in-game story. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

But seriously, I can empathize with Greybeards situation.

Not only is there the aggravation of getting the computer up and running, but it messes up his PBW games.

Aaarrrrggghhhhh!!!!! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

I have had my computer for less than two years.

Within 4 months of getting it, the CPU fan went.

Within a year, the fan on the video card went.

Both were on warranty. But I didn't get my computer back for 3 weeks and 2 weeks respectively.

Now, my CPU fan is going again(vibrating, noise).

The CPU fans are good fans (ball bearings not sleeves etc.)

Tried a couple of places to buy a replacement, don't have the same size amps/amps. Smaller fans but not my size.

Did buy a CPU fan with double the amp/wattage of the one I have. It is actually a case fan but I can install it as a CPU fan.

I now have a problem with the screws, as the new fan is twice as thick. And no one has the longer screws.

Will have to make do with different type of screws.

My computer sounds like a tractor under load.

Should have it fixed by tomorrow, so shouldn't miss any turns.

Didn't have this problem with all the Macs I bought in 20 years!

Greybeard, I certainly empathize with you. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif

RE: Fan Life,
I have a friend with a lot of cats. Her fans have a use life of about 9 months.
I'd suggest rigging up a filter of some sort if you think that might be the issue.

Actually, I don't have a cat. Or a dog.

But I do have a cockatoo parrot which sheds a white powder which is something like talcum powder.

Don't think that is the problem. Or is it?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">What kind of computer is it? I have had fan problems in the past, but it is related to the amount of dust they have to eat.

Open the case and mount the outside fan pointing inside ? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif An open cask of dry ice between fan and computer would be nice.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">OK, but I was kinda wanting to know what was inside. AMD or Intel, that kind of stuff. With details I can link you to some places where you can get high quality fans and stuff. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

It's a P4 1.3 ghz.

I've installed the CPU fan and everything is working well...or at least it no longer sounds like a tractor.

It'll be interesting to see how long this fan Lasts.
