CD Music?

I have this option enabled, but no music plays at all. In fact, I can't find any music files on the CD or in the folders on my hard drive.

Is the CD music option just to allow you to play some other music CD while playing SEIV or am I missing something?

Re: CD Music?

Do you have an analog cable running from your CD drive to the sound card? If not, do you have digital playback enabled for the CD Drive?

Other than those, is the CD Music setting in Settings.txt (in the Data folder) set to allow music, or disallow it?

Buddy Lee March 14th, 2003 11:18 PM

Re: CD Music?

There is a small cable attached, and the box to enable digital audio is greyed out in my device manager.

Haven't had trouble playing any kind of audio from CD before, so what's different here?

Fyron March 14th, 2003 11:30 PM

Re: CD Music?

Ok, check the Settings.txt file and look for the Allow CD Music line (at the top). Make sure it is set to TRUE. If FALSE, you can't play any CD music in SE4.

Buddy Lee March 14th, 2003 11:35 PM

Re: CD Music?

Yep, it's set to TRUE. Forgot to mention that before.

Fyron March 15th, 2003 01:50 AM

Re: CD Music?

You do have the game CD in the drive, right? There is no music if the CD is not in there.

How about in the game options menu? Is the CD Music turned on there?

Re: CD Music?

Yep, CD is in and the option is enabled for CD music. I'm on WinME, but my friend is having the same trouble on XP with a completely different sound card. This is the Gold Version of SEIV.

It appears that the CD drive is being accessed (like you'd expect with CD music) for a minute or so after I start the game, but then it stops.

Neither of us have ever had trouble like this. And let me repeat something from my first post: I don't see any music ON the CD when I explore it.

Can you just play the music off the CD in say, Windows Media Player?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Ummm.... again, I don't see any music ON THE CD.

I am looking at the contents of the CD in my drive right now. It has the main D: directory, and two folders: DEMOS and EXTRAS. There are no music files, no media files of ANY kind, in any of the three locations.

Overall, I have no other sound problems in this game and no sound troubles in any other applications whatsoever. I swear it is beginning to look to me like there simply isn't any music there to be played...

You're not alone - I am having the exact same problem with my copy of SEIV Gold (just restarting to play after a long hiatus). The music tracks can be played via Windows media, but will not run while I play the game. Is this a Windows ME/XP issue? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">For the fourth time: I do not see any music files on the CD at all. Neither does my friend on his.

We both just ordered the game directly from Malfador Last week. I'm starting to think the music was left off this batch of CD's or something. The thing is, I really don't care about music if the game plays fine, but I'd still like to know why this doesn't work.

Re: CD Music?

Try placing an Audio CD in the drive, and run SE4. This will see if it is the game CD with the problem, or some configuration problem.

Also see if you can get the game CD music to play in a stereo or CD player. Remember, track 1 is data, and needs to be skipped in such a device.

Also try playing the game CD music in WinAmp or Windows Media Player (or some other such program) by loading a directory and selecting "D:\".

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">You won't see them in Explorer because they are Audio tracks on a combination Data/Audio CD. Explorer just treats such CDs as Data CDs.

I was editing my post to include that while you were writing that post....

Ah, ok. Gotcha now on the non-reading of the music.

I can get the music to play in Windows Media Player, but no go in game.

Fyron March 15th, 2003 03:47 AM

Re: CD Music?

Ok. Try placing a different Audio CD in the drive, and see if SE4 plays that when you run it. If so, then there could be an issue with your se4 CD. If not, then there is no problem with your se4 CD itself. We will have to try something else to figure out why it is not working. I assume you are on the latest patch of SE4 Gold (1.84)?

Buddy Lee March 15th, 2003 03:57 AM

Re: CD Music?

Started up the game with a commercial music CD in the drive... same thing. Game plays fine, but no music. The CD drive light is flickering, but the drive doesn't seem to be moving.

And yes, I am on the 1.84 patch. I also have the new TDM modpack installed. That's it.

Fyron March 15th, 2003 03:58 AM

Re: CD Music?

Try enabling Digital Audio Playback for the CD Drive.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Two questions:
1) Are you loading SE4 with the TDM mod, or with no mod?
2) Did you check the relevant Settings.txt? If you are loading with TDM, did you check Data\Settings.txt or TDM-Modpack\Data\Settings.txt?

Just go make sure both are set to TRUE. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

The box to enable Digital CD Audio is greyed out. Not sure why, or how to un-grey it...

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">That is probably because of the analog cable going from the CD drive to the Sound Card. You could try unplugging that (after shutting down), and then try to enable digital playback and see if the music plays. (dont forget to see my Last post, made while you were typing http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ).

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">The CD audio is on in the TDM settings file... just checked that. I'm not going to mess about with the hardware for this - shouldn't be necessary. I can play the SEIV music tracks in Windows Media Player, and I have no sound problems in any other games or while playing music CD's, so tinkering with the cables isn't entering into this.

Tinkering with the hardware always enters into it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif Its up to you if you want to make it work or not.

Re: CD Music?

i am not able to listen to music anymore either. even with a regular audio cd in the drive. i checked the settings file and initially the allow cd music was set to false. i have changed it to true, but still no music. this is on both my home pc and my laptop.
edit: i had disabled the cd music initially since i was listening to whatever was on the radio at the time instead.

Re: CD Music?

Well I tried to reenable the music on my game and got it working. It sounds like you may have done all this but here is how I got it working.

1 - the settings file option set to TRUE As mentioned previously
2 - The Allow CD game option in the game turned on.
Now at this point I had NO music BUT if I closed the program and restarted it the music came on.
I also noticed that if the line in the settings file is set to False turning on the option in game does nothing.

I'm so glad I didn't have to tear my tower apart to do it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif I'm still curious if this is an SEIV code thing, or a Windows thing - but that would require someone much more tech savvy than I am. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif Anyways, thanks for the tip.
