My Favourite Shipset Designers
My Top 8 Shipset Designers
1. Hadrien Adventine For all hsi work, he was trully a master at ship design 2. Hugh Manatee, Defiantly one to watch out for, his Swarm and work for Lord Kodos are amazing 3. Marc Angstadt, The Hedres is my favourite shipset, great work 4. Trooper, The Pirates and Spacesharks are trully in a class of their own 5. Atrocities, Need I say more http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif 6. Captain Kwok, the work on his Star Trek Mod is amazing stuff 7. Taera/Andrey Taskaev, The Taera is probably the shipset with the most effort put into it ever! 8. Ryan Begemann, His work was great, the Goa'uld were simply classic There are others Like Katchoo, John Beech, Don Phillips, Zero Adunn, Andres Lescano and Oleg, well done for all of you for making class shipsets! But they are my top 8, but congratulations to anyone mentioned in this post! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif |
Re: My Favourite Shipset Designers
Thanks. But 5th place? I would say 10th at least.

Re: My Favourite Shipset Designers
Another thread that might become polemical...
I would choose, tied for first place, Andres Lescano and Atrocities (even if he doesn't answer quickly to its private Messages... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ) both for the profusion and the quality of their work. John beech and Hadrian Avantime come not far behind, too bad they are no more in the neighbourhood http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif . I also like Don Philips.

Re: My Favourite Shipset Designers
Thanks Trooper. Sorry about the drag time on my responses. My bad.
I love all of the ship sets that are out, and would rate your Sharks set as the best of the best as you are a #1 ship set maker IMHO. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif I think any one who tackes a ship set and pulls it off is great. And I want this on the record. I would never have gotten into ship set making if not for two people. ICQ and TOP buddy Flipper, and Warp__Nine. John B. was very helpful and Andres was an inspiration to me. Rambie just blew me away and made me strive to do better with each revision. Those guys are to blame for the sets I have forced upon you all. [ April 14, 2003, 14:45: Message edited by: Atrocities ] |
Re: My Favourite Shipset Designers
wow, http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif thanks but I don't know if I deserve 2nd yet, I only have 1 complete shipset and it doesn't have AI nor does it have Neostandard compatibility(soon I'll deserve this but not just now http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/blush.gif ).

Re: My Favourite Shipset Designers
RD, perhaps you should edit your original post and change,..
"My Top 8 Shipset Designers" to... "My Top 8 Shipset Designers: In no particular order!" ...just trying to help avoid any unwarranted tension! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif Edit: P.S. or change the numbering system to letters... a, b, c,..! Re: My Favourite Shipset Designers
Thanks Trooper and thanks Atrocities.
Sounds like we should make a poll out of this thread. In my rating John Beech is in 1st place closely followed by Hadrian Aventine in 2nd place. I agree with Trooper that it's a shame they're not working in SE4 any more. Others are difficult to order (I'm including myself among them). I will not make names because I'm sure I'll miss many great artists. I currently have more than 200 installed shipsets. There are some that have made only one shipset but a very cool one, and others that have made an impressive number of them, and others that achieved a good balance in between. There are also many variations in technics, from 2D drawings from scratch to many different 3d programs. Some shipsets made in doga look poor and too similar others look great, the same could probably be said about other programs but I guess that doga's pre-made pieces tend to produce more repetitions. |

Re: My Favourite Shipset Designers
Rollo your right. Who could we forget them. We need a list of all the ship set authors.

Re: My Favourite Shipset Designers
What areas go into peoples selection of prefered ship sets?
I like the Space Sharks for what I percieve as Technical Qualty - Hard for me define or describe this. Originalty - I have never seen anything close to this except maybe the "Space Sting Rays". Befor it came along I would have said the United Flora. Visual Apeal - To me they just look good Continuity - From one ship to the next. For me to select 1 or 5 top designers? Quantity is never a deciding factor with me. Qualty - I don't feel able to judge the technical qualty of most ships. Orignalty is just that and very few of the sets copy someone elses. Not all have visual apeal but frequently that was not the goal of the artist. Continuity again is up to the artist. As such I find myself unable come up with a list of designers. I will continuek to admirer each set on its own merrits. Then again, I usualy am a bit crude and angular. [ April 17, 2003, 23:01: Message edited by: Gryphin ] |

The next most important factor is continuity. There has to be a theme linking all the images together so that they are a coherent set, but on the other hand, each ship has to be distinctive. It's a fine line to tread. Finally, I would say originality and ideas. I'm constantly amazed and delighted by the stuff people come up with. The whole point of downloading shipsets is variety, so it's nice to see something truly unique. |
