I think the discussion was in the Official Image Collection thread (or whatever the Image Mod thread is called...). [ April 17, 2003, 19:20: Message edited by: Imperator Fyron ] |
Re: (OT) Zip Programs
First of all, there is a Zip for Windows from PKware, the inventors of ZIP format. It's just called 'PKZip for Windows' as far as I know. Find it at www.pkware.com IIRC?
There is also Quickzip, which handles lots of other formats but it's a little bit buggy. It can't handle multi-file archives in RAR format, even though it claims it can for example. And it will skip several files when extracting a ZIP if it hits a file with a bad CRC, which means you need another program to extract the file(s) it skips. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif Still, it's nice in many ways. I do use it. Find it at www.quickzip.org if you want to try it. |
Re: (OT) Zip Programs
WinRAR handles all archive formats and does them better than (or equal to) most programs. It is most certainly better at compressing files than WinZip is.

Re: (OT) Zip Programs
My favorite is PowerArchiver, used to be free, I think it's freeware now.
it mergers better with the windows shell than the others , my opinion. Especially handy when unzipping many files at once bu right clicking on them. Also handles most formats. WinRAR is good to but I haven't used that one for almost a year now. |

Re: (OT) Zip Programs
I started it in the Image collection thread when I mentioned 7-Zip http://www.7-zip.org
It has the best compression of any zip program I have seen and its free. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif Ron Coit |
Re: (OT) Zip Programs
Try UltimateZip - supports a zillion file formats and a handy Windows Explorer integrated menu! Only problem is when you try to open a zip file, you have to wait for a little popup screen, but with the explorer integration you hardly ever have to do that anyway...

Re: (OT) Zip Programs
dont forget about .ace archives too.

Re: (OT) Zip Programs
yeah, i like WinAce myself. It handles a lot of other zip files too.

Re: (OT) Zip Programs
Yeah... well... the only way to see which programs are actually better is to get all of them and then test to see how large the archive files they produce are. I know that WinRAR makes smaller ZIP files than WinZip (and RARs are smaller than ZIPs already). But I haven't tested the other programs. But really, it doesn't matter what you use because most of them compress files about the same. Of course, this only holds as long as it isn't something as crappy as WinZip. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
