God damn that's a sweet ship. If you can put some decals on it i'll be drowning people in my drool http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif

As fer inspiration, it looks like a ship from Starship Troopers.

Starship Troopers, right? In the finale "March on to Victory" mini-ad where they say "We got the guns! We got the ships! But we need troops! and so on and on."

Wow! That is one sweet looking ship Trooper. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif I want the whole shipset now! Please. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

One suggestion I'd make is to give it just a bit of color or a decal or something. Anything to add more then just plain silver. But if you don't, it will still be a great shipset. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Ragnarok; no, you won't have it now, it will be a long and painfull process, as usual. Especially long this time, as I'm probably going back to work soon...

Yes, I'll put more color on some parts, this silver gray is nice but quite uniform...

Looking very good. Metallic shipsets are a very dangerous thing as they can look terrible or they can look amazing (like the Federal Union) This one trooper falls into the amazing Category http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I really like the overall look of that ship, it's not very alien though, more like something humanoids would build (obviously cos it was humans who made it in starship troppers) I like the look of the engines as well, they seem to grab my attention. Overall looking good!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I agree. I am now very much looking forward to pitting Trooper's new shipset against Atrocities' Pandoran shipset in a nice, gritty style game. Should be massively fun.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">That's one thing that's always kind of bothered me about some of the shipsets that come out. In the case of spaceships, convergeant evolution is bound to happen, so ships will start looking the same, even if they are built by other races. Design differences are bound to make them unique to a species, as each race has a somewhat different set of design requirements. But then that's just me. I don't mind the wild and crazy shipsets that much, but I like the more "down to Earth" ones myself. There's so many ways to make the industrial style ships unique and interesting.

At one point, I wanted to make some shipsets from Jovian Chronicles, specifically Earth and Jupiter's respective space fleets. Unfortunately, the ships in Jovian Chronicles are long and slender, which does not translate well into SEIV sprites, sadly. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

The carrier has been made with Bryce (not as easty-to-use as Doga, but very more powerful).

The characters have been retouched with photoshop.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I've started to use it at the beginning of the year for the pirates shipset. Took me about three days to produce something. I'm still learning to use textures, it's the harder thing in the software, I think.

Like Atrocities, I'm starting to think that SE IV
shipset making must come to a end for me. That's why I believe this shipset will be a crowning achievement.

There are so many things available yet for SE IV (trying to make all these things available is a full time job indeed), and SE V will make all that obsolete and useless next year... having this in mind doesn't give much motivation to spend so much time on a shipset.

Aside from the Star Trek mod, I'm also working on the replacement for the former Spoogy Federation (now known as the Juprup Federation) shipset as my final projects for SE:IV.

After that, I'm going to start thinking about Space Empires V and a potential mod I have in mind for it already.

Re: Citizen Federation Version 2.0 available !

By the way, what will be the format for SE V ships ? Will it be possible to convert graphics made with doga ? with bryce ?

Nodachi April 21st, 2003 01:12 AM

Re: Citizen Federation Version 2.0 available !

Well, Starfury ships will be .x files (directx), IIRC, so one would assume that SEV ships will be the same.

There are plug-ins for many 3d programs to export to that format. If you can't find one for your program of choice there are file converters that can do it for you.

A question for the shipset designers: If you make a new shipset for Starfury or SEV, can't you also release that set for SEIV, since it's just a matter of rendering to a bmp? For that matter, if you've saved the 3d project file for a SEIV shipset can't you use that for the new games? Just curious. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Re: Citizen Federation Version 2.0 available !

It seems it's impossible to export bryce 5 files to any other format. Too bad for the pirates & starship empire.
Perhaps you will see a spaceshark SE V Version, as DOGA L3 allows savings in .x format.

What software would you use to create .x file ?

Most of the mainstream programs (Maya, Lightwave, ect.) can do the export either natively or through a plug-in. Bryce seems to be an exception, http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif which is a shame since it can produce some amazing work.

Re: Citizen Federation Version 2.0 available !

Yes, but as it seems to be a "dead end" software (no export of the 3d files possible), this work will be useless for future SE games, so I dunno if I must encourage you to do the same. Nethertheless, it's great if your aim is the short term.

Nodachi April 21st, 2003 11:37 AM

Re: Citizen Federation Version 2.0 available !

Trooper, I just read a review of Bryce 5 over at PC-Review and it claims that you should be able to export to a variety of formats. Here's a link. I hope that their information is correct so you can create with software you're comfortable with. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

trooper April 21st, 2003 12:48 PM

Re: Citizen Federation Version 2.0 available !

It's a lie. All you can export is terrain. Great for landscapes, but useless for shipsets.

POVray is the best. Moray is a good modeller if you don't want to mess w/ script, or you have a large project, but you have to pay for it if you render many scenes (nag screen).

sPatch and hamaPatch are excelent for Spline Modelling (hamaPatch is Bilingual).

Above programs (except Moray) are free.

3D studio Max has a good modeller, but it does so-so rendering. Any raytraced stuff is going to take too long.

I'm working with bryce, but the trouble is all that work will be lost for SE V, because bryce can't export its files.

I tried Maya 4.5 but the soft always crashes when trying to extrude polygons. I couldn't find a patch to correct that. Also tried Moray, but I couldn't make it work, (maybe a moray/povray Version incompatibility) it's not very intuitive...
