My absolutely favorite RPG of all time is Final Fantasy VI. It was on the Super Nintendo, but you can play it on your PC using an emulator and a ROM file.

Also really good are Final Fantasy IV and V (also on SNES), Final Fantasy VII (on Sony Playstation or PC), Phantasy Star II, III, IV on Sega Genesis (can also run on emulator on PC).

The Exile series are pretty good, too. They have been upgraded to 3-D Versions and renamed as the Avernum series.

I came across a freeware retro-FF-clone a few years ago, it's probably still floating about. It was called "warrior dragon" and provided a few days' worth of entertainment. A google search should find it for you.

Another two damn fine RPG's, IMO, were Dark Sun: Shattered Lands & Dark Sun: Wake of The Ravenger.

Although the Last one was a bit buggy, they were pretty damn good, IMHO.

They're freeware now, and you can download them from the net. I have them both and I still play them from time to time.

Could try a free RPG type game called Laxius Power. A friend of mine reccomends it. Never played it myself.

I enjoyed the FFs and Dragon Warriors many of which can be found on Emulators now.

I know it's not what you requested, but: MORROWIND !
I have tested some RPG's over the Last years, but if you try this, you will be Banned for years. Never seen such a complex and captivating RPG system, never.

Outdated, but still good: Planescape Tournament, Baldur's Gate.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Have to agree on Morrowind. I started playing it recently, and it is phenominal! It took me some time to get used to the real time combat system, but it was worth it. The other RPG I played relatively recently was Wizardry 8. It has the advantages of multi-character parties and turn-based combat within a 3d environment. I really enjoyed it.

Try RuneSword 1 or Runesword 2. 1 is freeware, 2 is available for purchase. Both yield the feel of traditional pen+paper games, and you can get adventures created by many different people (on these Boards), and make some yourself reasonably easily.

Gwaihir April 29th, 2003 10:31 PM

Re: [OT] does anybody know about any good rpg\'s?

Wizardry 8 is excellent if you like old-style RPGs, some complain that it is too combat-focused, but it has nearly infinite replay capability, good NPCs, and its very pretty (3D environment, 1st person, real time). http://www.wizardry8.com/

(Yeah SIR-TECH! I even got a Apple IIe emulator so i could play the original Wizardry, although that was before Wiz8 came out. Sadly, they are no more.)

If you don't mind a 2d environment, the Exile trilogy is really really good, excellent storyline, flexible character development, and with the Blades of Exile Version, players can make their own adventures, some of which are really huge and complex. http://www.spidweb.com/

Exile 1 and 2 have pretty bad graphics, 3 and Blades are better.

Avernum is the Exile trilogy expanded and remade, with the bonus of a quasi-3D projected environment.

I have to throw in a pitch for Neverwinter Nights, which won RPG of the year from PC Gamer. I have played through the standard campaign with 7 different characters and had 7 different experiences because of that. Also comes with a great scenario editor to make your own campaigns.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">If you like Wizardry, track down a copy of Interplay's Wizardry Archives. You get Wizardry 1-7 for the PC. Some of them are a little tricky to get running on modern computers, but I got them going on an old 486 I had sitting around. RPG heaven!

I still think its ironic I can run arcade, NES, Genesis and SNES games fine on my PC..but to run -PC- programs from the same era a lot of the time I need to drag out an old computer..the SNES emulator for example works, while even Moslo isn't enough for some old games- they think my hardware is not enough to run it! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif

But i never actually finished all 7, I only played through 1 and part of 2. I started to port 1 to the TI-83 calculator though! problem is, the rendering of the wireframe view kinda too 8 seconds every step. not so hot. I guess if i weren't so lazy and wrote it in Z-80 assembly, it would run up to speed, but i kinda let the project drop. The chargen and combat running stuff was good for D&D after a little tweaking tho.

to Phoenix-D: yeah, i hate that, i have a bunch of classics I used to run on my Win3.1 machine (486DX, baby!), and no matter what i do, i can't make them work right on my 98 system. (props to 98 for being able to run almost all of them, but the speed is unmanageable. MoSlo is a great tool though, it has allowed me to keep a few oldies (anyone every heard of Fantasy Empires? Silicon Knights, SSI, TSR? sad, SSI and TSR are now owned by Ubi Soft and Wizards of the Coast, respectively, but Silicon Knights lives on!)

fantasy empires? i can't get the combat slow with mo'slo on 1%! what is the mhz requirement on that anyway?
note, it came from kmart in a 5-pack of other old games, so all i have is a code-sheet.

I liked playing with Bard's Tale Construction Set and Adventure Construction Set on my old comps (486DX and IBM XT, respectively), and I know..ACS is not really an RPG, but it's a lot of fun to me. Don't quite know where my copies of them ended up though http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif .

Ahh, the good old days of 5-1/4" floppies and Monochrome/CGA monitors... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Nor can I, and that's on my PII 350! But you pretty much have to run combat yourself, especially if you're attacking a castle, or for fun (Wheee, Magic User go BOOM!).
I played it originally on a 33 MHz 486DX Windows 3.1 machine. Along with a bunch of other classics. Once i got to the highest level, I decided to try to get to max level as fast as possible, and I started over - - - I made it in four campaigns. If your opponents are high-level enough (at least 10 levels > yours), you can really gain a lot of levels in one go! Higher level opponents aren't too terrible of a threat, they just get high-level heroes, which means that they get magic faster initially and get nasty artifacts. It really sucks when you have four huge masses of troops about to roll into enemy territory and suddenly all four get death spelled. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif If playing vs. high-level chaotic magic Users, never let troops sit in one place, unless you enjoy being whaled on.
The hardest scenarios were a decent challenge though.

Re: [OT] does anybody know about any good rpg\'s?

It seems like the web sites that used to have ROMs you can download for Super Nintendo and other emulators are all gone. A year ago, there were all sorts of places where you can download old games for different game systems, but now when I try to go back the old bookmarked pages, either they've disappeared, or the sites don't have any downloads anymore. Maybe they got shut down because of copyright issues?
