History, what is it good for?

The History button in the Aliens screen what does it do? I can't seem to make it do anything!

Re: History, what is it good for?

You have to have the option to keep track of events every turn. This is disabled in PBW games.

Re: History, what is it good for?

Techically it's not disabled. It's just that it requires the stats.txt files to work, and those aren't sent by default in PBW games because they give too much information to your opponent.

Ahh, I see. I don't play Single player.
Is it possible to make one's own statistic text file? I'll have to look into this!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Which is why it is disabled. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif Semantics are fun, but lets not clog this thread with an argument about them.

Re: History, what is it good for?

I tried running a few single player turns both sequential and simultaneous, to see how the hiostory is made. But I can't see how to make it.
If I could se how it's made perhaps I could make my own history files to keep track of events in the PBW games. If it's just text files it shouldn't be to hard.
But how to get a history ? What to do? I mean in the game, is there some setting, must it be multi player?
I'm confused (More so than usual)

Re: History, what is it good for?

Finally I got an entry.
When I made first contact, I didn't do anything it just popped into the history.
My battle with the aliens later didn't record as an event.
Can I edit this, is it saved in the stat file? Will check!

Re: History, what is it good for?

I see it, a file called events.
Will try to make one for my PBW games now..

Ok, here is a sample events file:
24007 4 0 0 Contact established.
24008 3 0 0 Contact established.
24009 4 0 0 War breaks out.
24012 2 0 0 Contact established.
24013 3 0 0 Trade Alliance established.

The first is the date, the second the empire, what are the 3:d and 4:th columns?
I'll try to change the text and to enter my own empire and see what happens.

Wasn't there a song by that title some time back?

"History, what is it GOOD for? Absolutely NOTHING!"

Made famous by the Boss. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Or: "History will teach us nothing" by Sting. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif

Both great songs with great lyrics.

</font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">War (What is it good for) was made famous in 1970 by Edwin Starr. The Boss's Version came much later. Here is an excerpt from an article about it;

"In 1970, Edwin began work with one of Motown's finest writers and producers, Norman Whitfield, who had been responsible for the continuing success of the Temptations. It was Norman and composer Barrett Strong who came up with perhaps the label's most controversial hit single ever.

"'War' was originally recorded by the Temptations," recalled Edwin. "It was buried on one of their albums. But then a lot of mail came in, mostly from students, asking why they didn't release it on a 45. Well, that was a touchy time, and that song had some implications. It was a message record, an opinion record, and stepped beyond being sheer entertainment. It could become a smash record, and that was fine, but if it went the other way, it could kill the career of whoever the artist was."

Apparently, the Temptations were afraid of the song, and so it was given to Edwin Starr."

"Oh yes, I suppose the Vietnam war WAS the MOST beneficial war of the century"

He said war in general. Results of some:

WW1: fertilizers (orginally because Germany needed a way to make explosives without importing)

WW2: radar, better planes, early jets; nuclear power

war and warfare have been one of the greatest driving forces for technology throughout the history of the human race, starting with the pointy stick (immortalized by a very serious and thoughtful Monty Python skit . . . ok, maybe just a little bit serious? Thoughtful on tuesday afternoons, between the hous of 1 and 2, weather permitting? Nah. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif )

What do we learn from history? Well if history is any example... mostly nothing. What could we learn from history? Well if history is any example... quite abit.

Of course many don't like history just forget the past blah blah blah and it is so boring blah blah blah.

Of course I am biased. Getting my B.A. in history in another week and half...

lalalala

I should stop posting just before I goto sleep.

But what are those two columns with zeroes in ?
I'll guess I can try it out later tonight and see, is it the colour of the text?
Does the small map in the history window have any function?
