Forum Addiction (U Know You\'re Addicted When...)
You know you are addicted when...
You have the topic numbers of the topics you are interested in memorized so that you know if there is something new posted or not. Or... Have more than one browser up so you can "sit" in a forum. Or... Work on your PBW turn while "lurking" in this forum. (no insult intended...just musing over my habits) ------------------------- So, "Poll Boy" (that would be me... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ) strikes again: Have some fun! |

You have commandeered an empty office to work in because someone said they felt "threatened" by the "bullet" image.

"Alt Tab" is faster but the hallways are carpeted and I don't always get a chance.

I HEAR that! When I sneak a turn in (only the ones that don't take a lot of thought), I have to be wary of every sound coming down the cubicles to my "cul de sac". |

Thanks for the idea dogscoff, I'll put it right beside the P II processor. They will never suspect a thing.
I have SE installed but I only asccess it before 9am. I may be IS but I'll be on thin ISE if I get caught with that open. |
Re: Forum Addiction (U Know You\'re Addicted When...)
I have a nice rearview mirror on my monitor at home. It even comes with a sticker that says, "Caution: bosses in mirror may be nearer than they appear".
http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif But I work in a room, not a cubicle, so I only have to worry when someone shows up to get something from the closets behind me. |

Unfortunately, I'm very busy at work so I rarely get to use this trick. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif Or maybe you can use some non-graphical, text-based internet browser program to read and post to the forum. When there are no graphics and it's just text, anything looks like work. [ May 13, 2003, 05:32: Message edited by: Kamog ] |

Re: Forum Addiction (U Know You\'re Addicted When...)
An added question would be,
Q Is this forum your home page? Q Do you go through withdrawls when it is down? Q Do you post more than five times an hour? Q Do you read this forum at work? Q Do you wish you worked at this forum? LOL, We need another 12 step program in addition to our current 12 Step Program for SEIV addiction. |
Re: Forum Addiction (U Know You\'re Addicted When...)
I use Notepad to hide yahoo messenger. I'll type the message in notepad, cut, Alt Tab, then paste.
I have to be fast. I think I will stick to using the remote office I found. Clearly we all have a problem here. The question is do we want to fix it. |

LOL! In response to all of Atrocities' questions: Yes.
As for lynx- yeah, it was a great browser. Only trouble is that ppl here would recognise it, being of a technical nature. What I need is a browser that's disguised as Excel or word. Actually, you can display web pages in Word, can't you? Hmmm... |
Re: Forum Addiction (U Know You\'re Addicted When...)
I just got the weirdest idea... why not do an 'office mod' for SEIV ? Change the space backgrounds to white. Change the planets, etc. images to look like lines of code/text/numbers. Change report images and speech files so they look like work but you still know what they mean.
Hmmm... better yet, call this the 'boss mod' !! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |

Re: Forum Addiction (U Know You\'re Addicted When...)
Ugh, but browsing in word? *sick face* no, no, no bad! and pages don't display correctluy, and . . . bad!
alt-F4 is faster than alt-tab sometimes, with way too many windows open, alt-tab can take a second to rearrange things. this is especially true of games that alter screen resolution. alt-f4 sometimes leaves your screen in the wrong resolution, but it does kill programs, dead, and fast (useful if the boss knows to look at the task bar and gets suspicipious if it is minimized off the screen . . . ) Also, check out www.sysinternals.com Process Explorerer is basically an enhanced task manager, only it does a better job of killing programs, can kill an IE window and ALL of its decendants cleanly (popup recursion anyone?), always gets all the memory back (in this respect it is better than the Win 95/98 taskman, which sometimes lost memory when it force closed a program), and it lets you browse all file handles and active DLLs, and even kill them individually without dirupting the program! (provided it can handle the loss) For example, you have a P2P program, you've got a great connection to one file you want, and you want to remove one completed file from your shared dir. but horror of horrors, people are d/ling that file, and you can't move it while its being accessed! even if you aren't able to block them, you can use Process explorer to kill the file handle, then snatch the file, and poof, clean extraction, and the client keeps running as happily as ever! Also good for catching spyware, and since it is ~120k, it fits on a disk and doesn't require an install . . . so it can be imported to almost any system and run from the disk. Poof, you have access to program manager capability, whether you have those privileges on the system or not http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif ! (it also lets you see processes that the program manager hides from you, although it has no service viewer) Also, they make internet monitors and registry monitors, good for catching spyware, employee-monitoring-ware, etc. All of them are free too. Download them toady! They sell professional Versions with some sort of improvements, but I've never really found the free Versions to be lacking in any way . . . try em out! No, i was not paid for this review . . . if only . . . *sigh* . . . anyway, they probably wouldn't want to advertize their features quite this way . . . http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif [ May 14, 2003, 09:40: Message edited by: Gwaihir ] |

Also, would that mean there would be a 24-step progrm needed or a 144-step program needed? |

Re: Forum Addiction (U Know You\'re Addicted When...)
You know you are addicted to the forum when:
You can name at least 20 different forum members off the top of your head. The first thing you do every morning is to check the forum. Then when you get to the office, you check the forum. Then during lunchtime you check the forum. Then when you get home from work you check the forum. You check the forum just before going to bed. You cannot go to sleep at night without first reading the forum. When the site is down, you are depressed and you feel that there is something important missing from your life. You cannot resist commenting on stuff on the forum, even if you know nothing about the topic being discussed. After posting something, you click the "refresh" button every 3 seconds to see if somebody has responded to your post. After posting something, you click on each of the names on the recent visitors to look at the "This user was Last seen..." line to see if they are reading the topic you posted in. You notice everytime Tesco changes his avatar. You remember all the different avatars he has gone through over the Last several months, and you can describe what each of them looks like. Whenever you have a question about any topic whatsoever, the first thing you do is to post the question in this forum. Whenever you find or learn something neat or interesting, regardless of the topic, you immediately post it in this forum to let everybody know. |
Re: Forum Addiction (U Know You\'re Addicted When...)
Just 20 members? I think I hit 40 before I had to start thinking... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
Oh, and can anyone give me any advice on how to get this rust off my begonias? |
Re: Forum Addiction (U Know You\'re Addicted When...)
I think Kamog hit it squarely on the nose!
Ya know, at work I was due one of the new flat-panel displays. After I hooked it up, the color didn't look right on this forum so I boxed it back up and took my conventional 19 back. That's kinda bad... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif |
Re: Forum Addiction (U Know You\'re Addicted When...)
Kamog!!! I am NOT addicted, and your message to me will not convince me otherwise http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif
p.s. maybe your addicted when you think that a general post is directed at YOU http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif |

After scanning all the threads you're watching, you eagerly look at your rating to see if anyone notices if you alive; or Brag to your wife what rank you hold on the forum (which, of course http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif , means NOTHING to her). |
