Galactic Civilizations?
I almost hate to ask this here. But what better place to get honest feedback that a forum that is populated with people who love space based strategy type of games.
Concerning Galactic Civilizations, is it any good? Yes, no? |
Re: Galactic Civilizations?

Re: Galactic Civilizations?
Gal civ is one of the best of its kind
I am really enjoying it. But if you get enjoyment from ship design, you will not be happy with it. But diplomatic relations and AI are the best. Check the designer's example game in galciv.com encyclophedia to see whether it is your kind of game. It is definately my kind of game! For me, there is 'one more turn' feel in the game just to see what would be the reaction of other civ to the decision that I made... Each civ is governed by individual AI routine so it is quite interesting Role playing element is also very interesting It does not come with multiplayer though. Metaverse is the substitue for multiplayer |

In a word, yes the game is good. I like the game a lot, but found that it did not have the utter depth of play and sence of role play that SEIV had. Would I recommend it, hell yes, it is a great game with a lot of neet things. |

and...not to mention....a free expansion around June/July....

If they do not even list SE4, no point in going to that web site...

Re: Galactic Civilizations?
I bought it. Played it for a week then really lost interest in it. And I was winning too. It is a very good game but I cannot explain why the sudden lost of interest. I also cannot explain the sudden interest in me going back to games like Warlords III and Civ III suddenly. I even have an excellent se4 game on hold. The good reviews outweigh the bad ones (are there bad reviews?). I would buy GalCiv but don't pay $49.99 for it!

Re: Galactic Civilizations?
Reviews are fairly meaningless. Civ 3 got nearly all great reviews, and look how much it sucks compared to Civ 2...

A new Civilization game? What will this be? Civ 4: Corporate Garbage Take 2? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

Re: Galactic Civilizations?
Sure you aren't mistaking a new Civ game for the newest Civ3 expansion? Civ3: Conquests. You know the one that makes Civ3 do everything it should have done with the first release? The one that makes Civ3: PTW actually work in an MP environment, and includes it so if you bought that one you just wasted a nice wad of cash and they want you to do it again so you can get the game that you thought you were getting when you bought Civ3 when it first came out. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif
I love the most recent trend that seems to be coming out where you call really big patches expansion packs and sell them. Next: MOO3: Return of the Orions *sarcasm - not real* Since Atari won't fund us for another patch we will release it in the guise of an expansion pack! Atari... where do I know that name... MOO3... and... Civ3! Do I see a pattern. |
Re: Galactic Civilizations?
It was Infgrames that screwed the fan base originally with Civ 3 and Civ 3 PTW... the game was made not complete rubbish, just regular rubbish, under Atari... interesting, eh? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: Galactic Civilizations?
Let add my two cents here (actually, that's all I have right now. my alternator on my car went out Monday and cost me over $300 to fix, and payday isn't until Friday!!). GalCiv is a great game, and there are times when I'm torn into which 4x game I want to play. I think SE4G is more moddable, or at least I can understand the modding more than I can for GalCiv. But GalCiv is a great game, and would highly recommend it.

Re: Galactic Civilizations?
Galactic Empires is to 4x as Chess is to wargaming.
I tried hard to like it, but SEIV is much deeper and GE is missing so, so much. GE has a couple of good ideas, but good ideas do not a game make. Even on the largest maps, you feel like the universe is so small. Ships are just pegs on a board that move until they "click" against an enemy world and then combat is very similar to Civilization 3. I want a grand space opera, Galactic Empires is Muzak. |
