HELP! Weird pc problem...
Hope oen of you can explain this to me and show me hwo to fix it. Something happened to my pc and now all my desktop icons have this stupid yahoo smiley icon superimposed over them.
Here's a picture... 1053040879.jpg I got to git rid of this, it's driving me crazy. I uninstalled yahoo instant messenger, and everything else yahoo I could find. I tried changing icons, they show changed, but then a second later the yahoo thingy shows back up. When I boot up the computer the icons show normally for a second and then the yahoo icons appear over top of them. Help please. Geoschmo |
Re: HELP! Weird pc problem...
Get TweakUI from www.microsoft.com and then set the icon that overlays all shortcuts to either default or none.

Re: HELP! Weird pc problem...
Yay!
I didn't even notice the shorcut arrows were gone. SO the Yahoo thingy overwrote the shortcut arrows somehow. Cool. That fixed it. Thanks |
Re: HELP! Weird pc problem...
Yeah, Yahoo is very very pervasive... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Yikes! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif
First off, look for anything blatently wrong in the Add/Remove Programs list. If you see something that's affiliated with Yahoo!, yank it out. (sounds like you already did this though). Then run "MSCONFIG" and look under the Startup Tab. Scroll down this list and look for anything with Yahoo! (or anything wierd). Take the checkmarks off, close the program and reboot to see if the problem goes away. If things get worse, run the program again and put the checkmarks back in. Oh, and don't forget to write a nasty letter to Yahoo!, and probably to a computer magazine or two. PC World has a watchdog which will go after Yahoo if this crap is happening to your system without your knowledge. MaximumPC has something similar too. Spread the word and get these spuds put out of business once and for all. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif |

Re: HELP! Weird pc problem...
I hate things that do that. Its one thing if "I" change something, but another if someone does it TO me and has some lame excuse of "its in the agreement form".
I am fairly computer literate, but something hit me 2 times recently that pushed me over the edge. I am carefull of what I download ect... but I do allow Javascript to run because of some sites I go to use it. But while looking around (and not porn) I got a pop-up of a realtime clock (or some such) and I closed it, but it seemed to hang a bit before it closed, well there is a company named Xupiter that auto loaded that program, changed my browser, and infested my registry http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif I got it unloaded, but I am sure a casual computer user wouldnt have been able to. After searching around the group is located in silicon valley but has an address in a country oversees at an address that dont exists. And they say that they prompt the user before installing anything, which is a lie. I have ran into this evil crud 2 times now. That is the kind of things that are messing up the internet. True, I can lock down my system to a point that nothing can happen, but then I would be getting alerts anytime I want to do something that will access a Cookie or some such. Bah, sorry for the rant. I hate when things like that happens. |
Re: HELP! Weird pc problem...
To be fair to Yahoo I doubt it was intentional. Otherwise I would have found numerous complaints to the fact while searching for a solution. More likely it was just a piece of poorly written code conflicting with something else I loaded, or a corrupted file, or user error. Although the Last one is unlikely. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: HELP! Weird pc problem...
Why Computers Sometimes Crash! by Dr. Seuss.
(Read this to yourself aloud - it's great!) If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port, and the bus is interrupted at a very Last resort, and the access of the memory makes your floppy disk abort, then the socket packet pocket has an error to report. If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash, and the double-clicking icon puts your window in the trash, and your data is corrupted cause the index doesn't hash, then your situation's hopeless and your system's gonna crash! If the label on the cable on the table at your house, says the network is connected to the button on your mouse, but your packets want to tunnel to another protocol, that's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall. And your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss, so your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse; then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang, 'cuz sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang. When the copy on your floppy's getting sloppy in the disk, and the macro code instructions is causing unnecessary risk, then you'll have to flash the memory and you'll want to RAM your ROM, and then quickly turn off the computer and be sure to tell your Mom! Well, that certainly clears things up for me. How about you? |

So that's why it crashed, I always wondered http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: HELP! Weird pc problem...
Today, I told one of our Users that their problem was caused by a problem with the Rudder Router.
It's not often that you have that much alliteration while actually telling the truth! I tried for an hour to come up with other cool sounding problem descriptions that are bogus but couldn't come up with one that sounded as good as that one. (We really do have a router in the Rudder building that went out. Honest!) |
