PBW Admins Or Other Computer Smart People

Can some one help me fix this problem. Every time I atempt to download a turn at PBW this is the error I get. I am now getting it everywhere I try to download something.

http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/newup...1054094903.JPG

I have done the following to try and correct it:

1. unisntalled IE and reinstalled from a disk provided by MS.

2. Installed a download program, it works, but does not work at PBW.

3. Set all my IE security option back to defualt, and have tried every setting to maximum with no luck.

I am at wits end here people. The proble occured a month ago after a failed attemtp to access and FTP site. The FTP functions work fine, but I can no longer downlaod game turns from PBW.

If you have any firewall software running, turn it off and see what happens. Same goes for any antivirus or other software that either scans or filters your internet connection.

Beyond that...? Maybe grab a copy of Mozilla and see if another browser works...?

Downloading seems to work fine for me, so the site should be fine.

I have been through the security settings from top to bottom. They are not the cause nor do I have a firewall causing the problem.

Lets face it, it is just crappy MS programing that caused this problem for me. Hell even MS support can't figure it out. Hence the new disk.

And no, it is not a virus either, that was the first thing I checked.

Try installing the latest Java Runtime Environment from Sun Microsystems, at www.java.com IIRC.

I have all my PBW turns emailed to me - no downloading direct from PBW required - and I can still access it from anywhere because it's a webmail account.

Can't you just use this system to get your turns?

PBW does not always reliably send out savegames or recieve plr files via email for a lot of people. It works for some, but not all. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Damn I wish I would have done this sooner. I am trying out Netscape, hell it is a lot faster than IE. A lot faster.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">That is what I do currently, but like Fyron said, the pbw email system is not a 100% and I do end up not receiving turns.

However, Netscape seems to be working fine. I got the pbw files no problem.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">you should try Opera- even faster again, with some cool features that IE and netscape lack.

I mean no offense Fyron, all of your Posts have been great, very informative, funny, serious, and down right helpful to many people. If there was an award to be given out, say an MVP (Most Valued Poster) I would vote for you in a heart beat.

Perhaps David could make you a really cool avatar when you break 10k. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Guess I am too late (as usual).

I would have ruled out security (anti-virus software and firewall) early 'cause I suspect Attrocities had been accessing the site in the past. Also, I run Network Ice and have NAT on my router and I experience no problems.

Since another browser works, I might hazard a guess that it was MS's latest update which newsreports have said was pulled after over 600,000 people lost some kind of connectivity after the patch was run. The patch was released Last Friday, I think. So, IF you updated your system with that patch (I think it was an XP patch), that may be your problem and you should consider removing it. If not, then I'm not sure what could have caused it.

Glad to hear it's working with a workaround anyway!

I have to agree...for some reason, the email doesn't always work. I did 20 (or so) turns with Mark the Merciful over the weekend and 19 out of 20 times, it sent the new turn via email. But one time, didn't. Go figure.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">You see, I was right, it was the latest patch that did you in. And to think those jerks at MS didn't know what the problem was. That should tell you how well they understand their own product.

If Aaron ran MS, it would be a lot better ran with patches that actually fix things and not break them.

At least you have figured a way around the problem.
