ATTENTION: Hugh Manatee Shipyards Is Under Construction

My Good comp might be baked, Every thing I was playing working on and otherwise doing on that PC is unavailabl to me at the moment. I'm on a *****y Cyrix M2 300 with 60 MB of ram, all my graphics work is on ice, this POS thing would never be able to handle Doga 3 I use. As for my PBW Games, I think I can stil play, just give me a second to set it all up.

Cyrix M2 300

Damn, those were the days, I remember when Cyrix was going to be the next best thing (with AMD, at least AMD is still around).

Look at it as a bit of history, you know going back to the day where a 120 meg HD was HUGE!!! and 14.4 baud modem made your buddies drool http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

Silly me, I remember when I bought my 200 meg HD and thought "I doubt that I will EVER fill this up" http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Hehe... every time I get a new computer I think, "geez, I could fit the entire hard drive of the one two systems back into this thing's RAM!" http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif

And when I first got MOO2 (can it be that long ago? I remember drooling over that game in Games Magazine when it first came out but my mom wouldn't let me buy it because the Antaran looked too scary so it might be violent http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif ), I had to delete a lot of stuff to get the game to run because it required 80 MEGABYTES of hard drive space... that was 1/5 of the hard drive that I had to share with my dad and all my brothers! I was so glad when we finally upgraded and I could install MOO2 without making my brother delete his baseball game, and the game could actually load without me having time to go downstairs and get a sandwich...

Oh well, this isn't even my topic, what am I doing rambling on and on here http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

It's all over, the Hugh manatee shipyards are on fire, I'm in a library next to a woman who's wearing way to much perfume http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif , the other computer that I was using to post stuff with is dead. I might be able to get first old pentium 90 with it's little 500MB hard drive to work but computer gaming and Graphics developement is all gone. the swarm, the space butterflies, the Machina, Fyrons dragons, the Souless, the Adamant opening screen it's all wherever deleted files go http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif .

Damn dude, and I thought I had bad luck. I wish I had a PC I could give you, but all of my old crap is long since gone.

What are you going to do now? I am sure there are good PC's out there real cheap and easy to get.

Atrocities put it right: Damn.

Are you sure your Hard Drive is dead? As long as it doesn't give you any detection errors during startup then the information on the Drive may still be recoverable (even if Windows is what crapped out). Popping the Drive into another computer (as a 2nd Drive) may allow you to retrieve information off the drive before a format.

If the Drive itself is making grinding noises, there's a chance it can be recovered. There's usually a speciallized computer store or 2 in every city that can make physical repairs to Hard Drives to recover data.

I feel your pain. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

I lost ~400MB of 3DSM and Rhino models a little over a year ago when my hard drive imploded, along with a couple of hundred painstakingly crafted custom textures. All my models for all the shipsets I've ever created are history, along with 4 sets that were in various stages of completion. I also lost a bunch of 3DSM scenes and movies that I'd spent months creating with my models.

And I had at least 40 blank CD's and a perfectly working CDR burner sitting in front of me at the time. Argh. I use Symantec Ghost on a regular basis now to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Anyhoo, good luck with that... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

Symantec Ghost? What is that and how can it help prevent HD melt down?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">IIRC, it's a backup application that creates a copy (mirror/ghost/image/etc) of the HDD, just in case it craps out on you. Saves reinstallation as well...

My networking classes were a while back, but the info should be relatively correct http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif .

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">At least the Swarm are still available on the PBW site. Perhaps we could arrange for Trooper to give them a home at SOTAS.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Xaren is correct, it can't prevent a HD from going bad, but it saves you a lot of heartache when/if it ever does. I keep a spare "cloned" HD in my computer now so if my original one dies all I have to do is swap a cable and I'm right back in business. Pretty handy, especially for folks like me who tend to have rotten luck with HD's.

And in the long run, investing in a backup HD to store your ghost image is a lot cheaper than doing multi-volume CDR backups.
