Fan Sites

Hey guys this a serious point I would like to state and I hope you dont mind my long windedness. (Did I spell that word right?)
Anyway I feel as a very small community as opposed to certain other game genres, we are pretty strong, but maybe its time we pool our resources together? There have been a few sites that I have been on since I have returned and seem to get old or outdated links..
May I make a suggestion that we as a community of players and modders put up and gather all the remaining sites and some way combine all of us?
Some could be the main modders, others forum Moderators, graphics, and Dave you can do the Avatars http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif , and so forth. I just don't like seeing fan sites disappear or feel neglected. Its kind of sad...that just being my opinion, but why not? I know myself that I am not a modder and in fact have been taking forever just to do my Flag, thanks Dave for the Bengal tiger Avatars I bummed off your site, anyway I digress, I could help like just clean up our site..I dont know am I just blowing up smoke? Its just I get tired of seeing all my favorite fan sites fall down or being unused or unchecked. I just think if we all have some way of contributing a fan site can stay as fresh and prepared.
If I am alone just smakc me around a bit...
hehe just a view from the sidelines

Re: Fan Sites

I just had an after thought too...hehe
but places for Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylon 5, and so forth can have a place to call their own. I know I would not mind a central location!!!!
Man I think I talk to much,

Re: Fan Sites

i remember a site a few years ago called the space empires debot. yep, debot. it dissapeared because of a lack of people on the forums. i don't recall much, but i think the people there where funny. so yep more fan interaction in bringing the fan sites together.

SpaceEmpires.org is currently in the process of being revived...nothing live yet, but in the process....

Re: Fan Sites

Space Empires Debot was the first SE centre and started the RP and storytelling movement.
Currently no such centre exists. SpaceEmpires.org while maintained by Hadrian was such a place but now the place is in the future.

Here's a promising website. While not a centre it is a gathering place for a different part of the community and might well become more a general centre in the near future:

BTW narf, most of those people are there http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: Fan Sites

I think the biggest problem with some of the Space Empires sites was that it seemed they were constantly changing and never really updating the site with anything new other than a design change. I think they focused too much on fancy scripts when a neatly designed but not too flashy site would have served fine and would have been easier to maintain and update.

Man, maybe I'm missing the point here, but isn't this entire forum what you're wanting? I mean it has links to all available mods, information on every shipset under the sun, fan fiction, FAQ, and any question you have is promptly answered quickly and by knowledgable people etc., etc (not to mention a WIDE range of off topic discussions.) I don't really understand what more it is you are asking for. It seems to me that this is THE premier site for the SEIV community. Like I said, maybe I'm missing the point, so if you think I am, feel free to fill me in.

Re: Fan Sites

Well to be more specific its not about the forum and stuff, I myself would like to help promote, also maybe have an IRC channel , and generall have a more updated, easily accessible place for us 4x fans to get togehter. I think in some ways a place that does feel like it is slowly dying. I may be wrong in that assessment, but I think that is the best way to convey my view, to be as blunt as how I feel about certain web sites we do have access to.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">And you really don't get much simpler than http://www.sandman43.fsnet.co.uk/se4main.htm

I remember a thread quite similar to this one (is se4 dying? Is the community finished) about half a year ago. And another one half a year before that.

No, this community has its peaks and troughs, but it is by no means dying. It has been around for a lot longer than many of us realise, and will continue to be here. The faces and the websites will change, but the community will remain for as long as the game does, and longer. IMHO the only things that could conceivably kill the community are:

a> se5 turns out to be a complete MOO3, and MOO4 happens to come out at the same time and provide everything promised by se5. That scenario is very unlikely and a year or two away anyway.

b> Malfador is either unwilling or unable to continue developping the se series for whatever reason and it comes to an abrupt end.

c> 4X games suddenly come into mainstream fashion and Se5 is a massive, global success on the scale of a big-budget game like Halo or The Sims. We are then drowned under a sea of clueless "strategy tourists" and script kiddies, all trying to hack pbw and start flamewars with the RTS communities.

d> We make first contact with the EEE in real life, making space-conquest games politically sensitive so that strategy gamers are persecuted worldwide and driven out of society by torch-wielding mobs.

But in any of these cases, we'd just adapt and survive. In (a) and (b) we'd move on to another game as an almost-intact sub-community, and/or continue as we are modding and playing the current Version of se4.
In (c) we'd survive as an elite subset of the larger fanbase and in (d) we'd live in caves with our families, secretly playing Risk with sets made of rocks and animal hides.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Drop by #se4 on gamesnet IRC server! It is the semi-official channel for SE4! Well, not really, just I say it is. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Shhhhh! Don't give Hasbro any more marketing ideas. [Razz]
Yea if they market the idea, they'd ruin it anyway like they did with Avalon Hill
AS far as the IRC channel sweet..I did not even know one existed!

As for activety in the forum. It is normal for things to slow down during the summer in the US. I'd expect about a 20 percent drop in general.
