Invulnerable Challenge - Warning... Spoilers!
This thread is for players and sideline comments on the Invulnerable Challenge Tournament progression. where players can post their progress, summaries, and debriefs. Participants can post their wrap-ups there, and this way, other players refrain from reading other participants' spoiler Posts (unless they really want to).
Since this game is run on the honor system, and, really, it's all about having fun, I don't think that would be a problem. I think many of us would find that very enjoyable... WARNING! You are discouraged from reading other player's tactics in this thread if you are actively competing in the challenge! --Please post your game progress any time you please, but don't read up on the tactics of other players. --You may choose to finish your game first... then tell us all about it! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif Thanks! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif [ July 10, 2003, 16:08: Message edited by: Stone Mill ] |

2419.4
Space Sharks are no more. They were not able to stand against the second attack wave. Thanks Stone Mill for the challenge. That was really fun. |
Re: Invulnerable Challenge - Warning... Spoilers!
2409.7 (no major spoilers)
I lost three colonies before setting up border defenses, which still need to be strengthened. Wiped out some of their colonies, reducing them to three systems. I've explored one of those, the other two are in the unexplored 1/4 of the quadrant. Now I have to start pushing them back. Edit / Update, 2411.1 (several spoilers here) They made their move before I made mine, opening warp points in and near my home system. I caught their warp point opener ship, at the cost of half of my fleet. They sent their minesweepers through first, but my defensive fleet wiped them all out and closed that WP. Then they sent 100+ ships through another WP a turn before I could close it, losing 25 to the mines I had there. After several clashes, I'm still facing about 50 enemy ships divided into two stacks, sitting there doing nothing. Thank the heavens for dumb AI. [ July 14, 2003, 20:02: Message edited by: Erax ] |

I have defeated the Space Sharks and rid them of the galaxy. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif No, not really. But I have finally started and am expanding rather well. I will post more when things get interesting. |

First OOPS! moment. Turn 65 when I realized my Uber-Baseships aren't particurly useful since they have no QR or supply storage. Two quontum engines are fast enough, but won't get you very far. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif Oh well, back to the drawing board.

2414.0 (no spoilers here) : Boring buildup phase. I'm not quite ready to make a move into their major colony systems, especially because they still have a LOT more ships than I do. They're not invading either.

Glad to hear they are using warp openers. I didn't think the AI would be all that great with coming after you. As I believe I mentioned, I purposefully made it difficult for them to stage an immediate offense; the challenge is really geared toward the AI defending it's home system. Harrassment of the players is gravy. I imagine this will be random for each player. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif |
Re: Invulnerable Challenge - Warning... Spoilers!
2415.0 (minor spoilers regarding AI tactics)
After I killed the 50 or so ships they sent at me, they stopped opening WPs into my side of the quadrant (but I believe they opened some more on their side). They tried sending some ships at me (no more than two at a time), then apparently gave up. I am now on the offensive, capturing some of their colonies. They still have a lot more ships than I do but they're not trying to stop me, so I'm basically up against their unarmed or lightly-armed support ships. They've converted the atmosphere on all the colonies I can see and built at least one system grav shield. I'd say their economic build-up routines are working very well. Right now I still have five unexplored systems on my map, one of which is their home system and the other is a colony system. I'll probably narrow the options some more this afternoon. |
Re: Invulnerable Challenge - Warning... Spoilers!
2411.9
Those storms... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif I lost about 100 base ships to them. I haven't yet figured out how the storms actually work. My first little fleet took no damage when it moved to the storms but this big fleet got destroyed entirely. Looks like a random damage http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif However this cause many extra turns re-building my ships. |

Re: Invulnerable Challenge - Warning... Spoilers!
When I wrote my Last post, I was feeling confident, well it is 2416.9, I went through their Last warp point, I think my ship designs did well, I had just under 400 ships and when the dust settled, I had no ships left but they have 4 planets, 25 SB's, 6 ST's, 8 LC's and a few transports left (some have alot of damage). Man, if I just had a few more ships. Oh, I glassed all their planets, no capture for me...
It is damn late, so I am not going to do any more turns until tommorow. Should I save the combat files for this turn, or are you getting alot of them. |
Re: Invulnerable Challenge - Warning... Spoilers!
2417.0 : Got two colony systems to go before I reach their home system. It's slow going because I'm capturing instead of glassing. Most of their ships are in the system I am currently invading, so ship counts for both sides will probably drop a lot in the next few turns.
They have three times as many ships as I do in this system, but I'm counting on superior design and strategy to win the day. |
Re: Invulnerable Challenge - Warning... Spoilers!
Curse you and your challenge!
I finally got some time to knock down alot of turns tonight. (before I was only doing 1 or 2 a day) -----POSSIBLE SPOILERS BELOW----- - - - - - I made it to 2409.6 of game time. Looking at the score screen when I first began the game I knew it would be tough just to survive out here; so I took a different route then most players would. I build a warp opener/closer from the start and I have now cut myself off from the Sharks. I had made first contact 9 turns into it! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif After closing off contact I continued my expansion process colonizing all available - oh and I will have me a ringworld in a few more turns - when I get a message saying that one of my planets has been destroyed by the Sharks. I'm thinking, "what the heck?!" I didn't even see a ship in any of my systems. So I think well no big deal and I continue on; then it happens again! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif After 3 more times such as this, losing planets without ever seeing a ship in any of my systems I finally build some sats that can detect cloaked ships; but to no avail! I have them in all my systems but for the next 3 turns I lose planets! I finally have to start abandoning some of my planets because I do not want to lose them. So I do so and I continue my search for whats doing this. I lose yet another planet and I decide to take another step; put mines on all my planets. So I do so and 2 turns later...BOOM! I finally caught the little son of a beach. I still, down to this turn, cannot figure out how he was able to get under my sensors and get to my planets without my seeing him at all. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif But the problem is solved and I am happily growing once again. I haven't seen the Sharks use warp point openers just yet but I'm sure it will be coming. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Great job so far on the callenge Stone Mill and I look forward to continuing this game onward. What message were you receiving when your planet was destroyed? I suppose this had to be by the cloaked ship with planet destroying capability. Funny how you didn't see it with the latest sensors. Maybe it hid in storms, or quickly left the map after blowing you up... and zoomed back in? And I guess when he hit the minefield, you didn't get his ship design. Too bad. Well, looks like the Sharks can be very crafty indeed! |

Oh yeah. I hate this game. Thought I was doing well too colonizing and containing the Sharks. The Last 5 turns they have opened warp points into several of my systems. While I was running around trying to clean up they cam in with a fleet and captured one of my planets. But then on the same turn they blew up the star in the same system they just captured the planet in!?!?!? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif I lost a bunch of ships and several planets, but at least they took some of their own out as well. I can't wait to see what they do next. Thanks for showing me just how bad I am at this game Stoney. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif Geoschmo |

I was recieving the usual message you get when a planet gets destroyed. Something along the lines of "Planet X in X system has been destroyed. We suspect the Sharks to be behind it." Not in those exact words but it was in that effect. Also on this turns that they would rid me of one of my planets I would recieve a message from them using entry one in their speech file "We are tired to bear your presence. There must be war." and then the next log entry would be notifying me of my lost planet. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif So to add to my Last post I was trying to figure out how in the world they were able to send these Messages to me when I had no open comm link to them. But I finally got it all straighten out and all is good now. But I am going on the basis of that they did indeed slip in and out of the system to hide in a nebula. What speed do their planet destroyers have? Probably 12 I would assume, correct? But no, I didn't get their design when I blew them to kingdom come. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif But oh well, all is good and I am doing farely well. Turn 2413.7 Update Prevoiusly, a SpaceSharks Star Destroyer took out the Asellus Tertius System while we only lost a small fleet that was protecting the captured Space Sharks planet. My 200 ship fleet took out the Regulan system loosing only about 30 ships. Captured 1 planet, which was then quickly destroyed by the SpaceSharks while my fleet took out the rest of the planets. Our 178 ship fleet warped thru into the Terradome system expecting victory after a hard fight and after 1 turn lost 85% of our Fleet. Now I have to rebuild my fleet. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif And I still don't know how I'm going to get into their Home System, but not going to try that warp point again. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif I wonder if that Star can be blown? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif |

Re: Invulnerable Challenge - Warning... Spoilers!
[EDIT] SPOILER (I thought there was Spoilers! in the name of this thread http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif )
. . . I have played a quite aggressive strategy. I started to build a warp point opener instantly in the biggest 8000M planet (because the high build rate). After I got that ready I started to attack against Sharks with my ships. I didn't had lots of them but my baseships were superior against Shark's ships (all of them didn't even have a talisman!). The shield accelerator, shard cannon and talisman is a lethal combination. The game date is now 2411.9 and I just send my first small (scout) fleet of 40 ships to the Sharks Last system. As I expected it got annihilated completely at the first wave. The biggest problem are storms. That first scout fleet has a storm destroyer accompanying and it got no damage when it entered to the storms. From this I deduced that a fleet with a storm destroyer won't suffer the damage from storms. Wrong. I lost my big fleet completely (about 150 baseships). I've now tested storms and the obvious result is that at every day there is about 50% chages to get the whole damage or get nothing. And it should be noticed that it's per day so a fleet will be undamaged or totally destroyed. Those seven storms in Terradome are deadly, if I have a bad luck they'll inflict 1400 damage to my ships! Perhaps some organic armor would be good! [ July 25, 2003, 20:35: Message edited by: Asmala ] |

Re: Invulnerable Challenge - Warning... Spoilers!
(BIG SPOILERS)
Back when I said I lost three colonies to the Sharks, it was to their planet destroyer. I never saw that ship, I parked a sensor ship over my Last colony in the Arcturus system, but they never attacked it. I am now at the door to their Last system, but they have a LOT of storms there ! I sent around 20 ships into one large stack of storms and lost them all. I'm capturing planets in the system while trying to decide what to do. I've had few resource shortages, probably because I don't use any 'fast construction' tricks. I was short on Organics for some turns in the early game, but that was it. The Sharks also threw a 23-ship fleet at me Last turn. Not enough to worry me but they might be able to glass one of the captured planets (I have fleets over some of them, over others only 4-5 ships for defense). Let's see what they do this turn. |

Re: Invulnerable Challenge - Warning... Spoilers!
(BIG SPOILERS)
OK, Last post the Sharks were coming at me with a 23-ship fleet. The next turn they turned tail and went right back to their home system ! I had them bottled up by 2419.4, but I had some bad luck getting storm killers into the storms on this side of the warp point. There were a LOT of storms there, and I don't want to lose anything on this side before I invade. Right now it's 2422.3 and I still have 85 storms on top of the warp point. At this rate, it will be another 6 turns at least before I get rid of the damaging ones, then I'll go through with a 500-600 ship fleet. I've already sent a suicide ship through, so I have some idea of what awaits me on the other side. Getting rid of the storms is terribly boring, but I hope to finish them all today. Edit : It is now 2423.2 and my fleet has breached the Shark defenses. Here's the full details : the turn before I went through, I had 820 ships total, while they had 200 ships and 33 bases. I sent 515 ships through and I believe I took no storm damage (lucky me !). The battle Lasted three rounds, at the end of which my fleet had 432 ships (9 of which were damaged) and they had nothing left at their end of the warp point. I intend to capture at least some of their planets, so I think it will be between 6 and 10 turns to final victory. [ July 29, 2003, 02:50: Message edited by: Erax ] |

SPOILER
Hurray! I finally get rid of those annoying 200+ storms. It was an enormous job. The game date is 2414.5 and I'm gathering and building my forces. Pretty soon I'll try to breach Shark's defences. BIG SPOILER: Those seven storms in Teradome are annoying, you can't never know beforehand if your ships will take the damage or not. An easy way of getting rid of those storms are simple: Just send a small fleet with a non-master-computer-storm-destroying-ship. Sharks will capture it using Allegience Subverter and then they'll use the ship and destroy those storms over the warp point http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif Well, AI constantly astonishes me with unbelievable strategic skills http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |

Re: Invulnerable Challenge - Warning... Spoilers!
The Sharks lost its Last planet at 2416.1 but the main battle was a couple of turns earlier.
I had ~350 ships in my fleet and after the battle I still had over 250 so the fleet was pretty overpowered. The most embarrassing thing is that I still had over 100 ships mothballed because I didn't had enough cash to unmothball them. If I hadn't build a fleet big enough for foolproof victory I could've beat the Sharks 20-30 turns earlier. The Challenge was very cool except those storms. It took a lot of patience and even more mouse clicks to get rid of them. |

Just a thought but perhaps the AI could handle the storms if the minister is turned on in storm destroyer ships. Of course it would slow down the process because I suspect that the AI can't destroy multiple storms in each turn.

Re: Invulnerable Challenge - Warning... Spoilers!
Spoilers.... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
The Sharks are no more in Terradome in 2418.8. I must have been much more lucky than others with the storms as I lost little to them - perhaps putting organic armour on my Baseships helped after I saw the storms in Regulan. After seeing the score differential at the begining I decided on an ecnomic expansion first, hunting party second approach. I had a hell time early fighting off a Shark attack. I colonised Tania Borealis straight off and then lost all of the planets. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif They nearly got through to the homesystem but I had luckily built a warp collapser earlier and saved myself. I then set about creating and collpasing all over my half of the galaxy to secure it. I ended up having only Sigma Three with a warp hole out, I built strong defences there and held off a lot of shark attacks until I had developed the systems behind and built up the war fleet. I had a couple of scary moments when I killed several star killers that were roaming around my side of the galaxy - that was one hell of a shock to see that - and just lucky I had a ship at the warp hole! Then it was a case of find em and splat em. I went for organic weapons to increase the build speed of the baseships, not ideal weapons but they did allow quick building. Thanks Stone Mill!! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif This was good fun and a sanity saver with PBW down! I would love to see more of these games set up. Perhaps there is space at the PBW server to keep these games available to the community so people can play them when ever they feel the need? Joachim |

As far as the storms- it's hard to say, but your success is something to note. Other players have done well "armoring up." As for continuing to develop more of these, I think it's a wonderful idea. It's not too much work, and it's actually kind of fun to try and stump the other players. The winner of this tourney will be encouraged to do so. If he does not wish to do so, I can certainly make another. Best regards. |
Re: Invulnerable Challenge - Warning... Spoilers!
Turn 2411.9
No the game isn't over...not even close. No way I'm going to beat the Sharks in record time. Most of the game has been relatively trouble-free. I safeguarded my home system, spread out..took out the few Sharks swimming in the open systems...captured colonies and spaced all the sharks (*evil laugh*) I have a spy ship in Asellus Tertius that has been there for years. It's fast and runs circles that the Space Sharks can't handle. I might as well have named the ship "the Gingerbread Man". I finally have strong enough forces to dare the invasion, but decided to counter the damaging warp points with heavily-armored sweepers. Just as I am massing my troops in Adarak, the Sharks try to use that second warp point to pop in behind my ships and make a run at my systems. If they had gotten through at a certain time, they would have caught my strong yet lonely warp-opening vessel. Fortunately, the 21 sharks appeared the same time my group of organic baseships, who cleaned them up without getting a scratch. Still, there are another 8 sharks who are daring to rush for the point, but I think they arrive the same time as my second group which needs to rendezvous with the invasion fleet before I close that point. After that, the real fun begins when I attack Asellus Tertius. I can't wait to hit the 130+ sharks massed at the interior warp point (near AS VII), since they have seven starbases. I've seen these on my scanners, and my simulations show them to be unholy weapons in a group of 2 or 3...seven will probably take out 40 ships by themselves, and that's not including their over 120 friends!! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |
