Question about "Sentry"

Sometimes I try to put ships on "Sentry" that I don't want to move for a while and don't want to pay attention to....the Icon shows up...I select the units and it "blinks" when I click sentry like it's trying..but nothing happens...I originally thought it was ships low on fuel..but this is not always the case...what gives? Thanks in advance for your answers.

Looking forward to multi-player but I gotta know what I'm not doing right (in single player) and what might be a little bug before I start thrashing the experts...thanks

Re: Question about "Sentry"

It won't let you sentry if there is already an enemy ship in the system.

Re: Question about "Sentry"

There are no enemy ships in this system and the Sentry button shows full colors....any other reasons?

Re: Question about "Sentry"

Ships which are at a resupply warning (barrel with yellow bottom)--usually 1000 supplies or less--may not sentry.

As for the question...
Think of it not that they won't go on sentry... instead, they sentry, spot the problem and them exit sentry mode to tell you on the same turn http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: Question about "Sentry"

This might be a post for the "Hidden Secrets" thread, but Sentry will also turn off if a cloaked ship enters your sector. This could have been a bug in the demo, but I remember having sentried ships in a system, and then they would mysteriously de-sentry, even with no visible enemies or supply problems. And then a random planet or ship would get attacked out of nowhere. I could have missed something, because I haven't been foolish enough to allow a cloaked ship behind my lines again (mines are good), and this only happened the first time I ever played and it was the demo. I've only played about 4 games with the Gold Version... Anyone else notice this?

Because the ship could enter the system and attack during the same turn causing you not to see the ship (should you destroy it in the attack) when your ship de-sentrys. Just a possibility.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I seem to recall that nothing was attacked the turn my units/ships de-sentried, but then something was attacked the following turn well within my territory (too far to get to in one turn). However, if Geo tested it in 1.84 and had no problems, I tend to beleive it was a bug in the demo. There were a couple bugs in the demo if I recall correctly...

So, forget I said anything, it was disproven. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
