Be Warned

There is a new email going around that says it is from Microsoft. It looks real enough, but it is a virus.

DO NOT OPEN the attachment or click on any of the Hyperlinks.

Be smart, why would Microsoft email an update to you?????

Hehe. As if Microsoft would ever patch all known vulnerabilities http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

They need the vulnerabilities to entice you to buy the next Version of windows.

Yes, that is Swen.A, a particularly nasty little item. Not only does it spread through the mentioned email, it will also impersonate a rejected email, will post itself to newsGroups, and will attempt to spread through ICQ and file sharing services such as Kazaa (sp?). It will even pop up a faked error dialog on the infected computer saying that there is a problem with the email connection and ask for the Users account name and password.

This is what MS had to say about it.

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Customer Service.

I am Lindsey and I understand from your e-mail that you received a message that appears to be from Microsoft and contains an attachment or virus. I apologize for any inconvenience this e-mail may have caused you.

As you may have suspected, this is a hoax and did not originate from Microsoft. The e-mail appears to be the result of the "W32/Swen@MM" virus which causes infected systems to send out e-mails that forge the @microsoft.com e-mail address in the "From" field.

We never send unsolicited e-mails with attachments. Since this is the result of a spreading computer virus, there is no single source for us to investigate or track down. Information about Microsoft security policies and updates can be found at:
