How can you trade unique techs?
I seem to recall reading somewhere here that it is possible to have a tech that only one race can research but that will also allow that race to gift or trade that tech to others. Anyone know how to do this?

AFAIK ... you can't in the standard game {linka}
But, you could mod a intermediate tech, that has a unique tech prereqisite. Then, a captured ship for a race that had the unique tech could be analyzed for the dependant tech, which could be researched further, etc. As I recall, adding tech's like this can kinda screw up the research tree. Well that's what I thought but I can't get it to work. It looks to me like you can't get a tech if you don't have the pre-requisite tech. I thought you could do this. ie someone could gift you shields even though you had not yet researched physics.

You can analyze a ship and gain some levels in shield tech if you have no physics, but you can not research shields any until you get physics. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
Check out the SE4 Modding Tutorial, in my sig. It has a section on how to make capturable racial techs. It applies to unique techs as well. |
