OT: The Offical Lets Help Atrocities Thread

So I am up late tonight, well really this morning, since I haven't been to bed yet and I have to get up in time to attend the Chat with Aaron on #se4, and it occured to me, while looking for cool ideas to add to the ST Mod, that I really miss my cable modem.

Do any of you know how long it takes to download an image off of the web on dial up? Well let me just say that I started it Last month and it just finished. Hell my dial up is so slow:

1. That I post a message here and it does not show up for six hours.
2. That I log on in the morning and by the time dinner is ready it is connnected.
3. That dried super glue flows faster than data on my connection.
4. That I typed and posted this message on September 16th and it just now showed up.
5. I am just now getting email from a year ago.

Needless to say I need help. So I have started the offical lets help Atrocities get a satellite internet system. This way after I have the system I can come here, on dial up, and post about how it does not work in any weather. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

What I need from you all is money, and lots of it. I am talking billions here. Because literally I need billions of dollars to start my evil empire. Oh wait, wrong forum. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Seriously though, I don't want money or any thing, I just thought it would be interesting to discuss how slow my dial up service really is.

I read a while back that there is a new technology on the horizon that will allow people to use power lines, yes you read it correctly, power lines to connect to the internet. No this is not a hoax or something I saw on a movie, it was a news story about a real product. A product, that if it ever comes to the masses, will literally kill AT&T, Comcast, AOL and any one else who provides service for dial up, cable, DSL, ISDN, Satellite, or wireless internet. Oh sure many will jump on the band wagon and offer ISP services, but who the hell would want them when all you have to do is plug your PC into the power jack and voila your off and running around the web. (Of course the company that will offer this service will be your ISP and they will want bookooo $$$$$$ denaro.)

When I first started on line, I did it through an ISP named Prodegy with a 14.4 dial up modem. Man that was the bomb back in the day of P75's and 8mg of ram. But now, if your not hooked up with cable/dsl/Satellite connection you be jacked.

Think about the cost. Cable runs about $50.00 a month as does DSL. If your on Dial up you pay about $30.00 for a second phone line, and then another $23.00 for dial up service. (That is dial up service that is worth a ****.) That means your paying just about the same for dial up as you would be for cable or dsl. Satellite is far more expensive and really not all that cost effective.

Now we have wireless internet, but I live to far from a starbucks now to get it for free. (Shhhusshh, they aren't supposeta know that you can use their system for free.)

So in the end, I am stuck out here in boonies with just good old reliabl........ Sorry I was kicked off for a bit, where was I? Oh ya, so here I am all broken hearted sitting out in th... Damn it! Must be a peek time or something. Well you get the picture.

So in retrospect, if you do want to send me money, well that would be great. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Hell I won't say no that free cash. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif J/k Keep thy money for a rainy day. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Or Donate to PBW, buy more Shrapnel & MM games, or give it to charity. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Signing off my dial up connection now. Hopefully I will see many of you at the Chat today with Aaron.

Actually, high-power transmission lines already carry phone signals - it's pretty old technology. The trick would be to send data over ordinary power lines.

Atrocities, It might be cheaper to take up a collection to move you somewhere you can get highspeed internet access. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Sure it could work, but I imagine that the power companies would rather use the bandwidth on their lines for their own communications than have to spread it around a bunch of people.
