OT: Pay Music Sites

I am finally using my 100 free song downloads from emusic.com and I have to say that I haven't found a single song in their data base that I actually want.

From what I understand "all" musics sites seem to be having the same problem from Imusic on down.

All I want is a fricking PETER GABRIEL song burn you up, burn you down. Yet no can find. I hate, and I do mean this, hate p2p, but........ what is a man to do? I know, I can order the cd on amazon.com But guess what, I can't find this song on any of his CD's. I am so depressed. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

Users of music-sharing software might want to take note of this warning posted on the home page of the ISP (up.net) I use:

If getting virii from e-mail attachments wasn't enough, now Windows Users will have to worry about getting virii from File Sharing networks. Users of P2P Networks such as Kazaa, Morpheus, Limewire, Bear Share, and iMesh should be warned that this is the new medium used to distribute viruses to unexpected Windows Users. Eight worms have hit the Kazaa network since Benjamin virus struck on May 19, 2002. Spybot is the latest virus to be introduced on P2P Networks. In less than two weeks three different Versions have already been reported. I highly recommend Users of P2P Networks get anti-virus software installed and make sure it's updated regularly

Thought it was worth mentioning. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif

Anti-virus software is a good idea if you're doing anything on the Internet anyway. If there's a possibility of data being transmitted to your computer, there's a possibility of a virus being sent.

As for music download services, one of my friends created a position for himself at the University (wrote up a job description, came to the Dean of Information Services, and he had a job), and part of his job is looking into possibly working out a deal with one of these services for the students on campus. Thus far, he has tried out MusicMatch, PressPlay, Napster (the re-incarnated pay service), and iTunes, and a few others. iTunes is the only one he really likes so far, because your music doesn't disappear if you forget to renew your subscription; once you download a song and pay for it, it's yours, period. Although I think he has issues with selection on all of the services...

Wooow, your music dissappears if you do not renew your subscription?

Man am I ever glad I took the day off and am home alone. I would not have been on the forum today to read this and might have missed this.

I was thinking about one of these pay services when my cable ISP is back on line. (I am awaiting installation now.)

I will check out Itunes. They have a site for Windows uses now right?

I know MusicMatch and PressPlay have the disappearing songs (and both are almost dead now anyway, AFAIK). I'm not sure of what the terms on the new Napster are, I'll ask though.

iTunes has a Windows client now for their store, although it's still pretty nifty by itself. On the University network, there are several people that share their libraires, and you can stream from them at no cost (other than bandwidth, of course). So if you really want to listen to a certain song, and don't feel like owning it, you can look through others' shared libraries, or if you want to find some new music, or etc. Only thing is you have to search through each individual library, you can't search across all of them http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif .
