[OT] Kazaa Sues RIAA
Sharman Networks, owners of Kazaa, are suing the RIAA over copyright infringement of their product. Apparently, the RIAA released a Version of Kazaa illegally modified which they used to track file sharers (again, not quite legally). The plot thickens.

Re: [OT] Kazaa Sues RIAA
I seem to recall someone else on this forum mentioning that the RIAA had released its own spy ware P2P system and that person was rebuffed as he had no proof. Well I believe this now qualifies as proof.
Indeed the plot does thicken. |
Re: [OT] Kazaa Sues RIAA
I read that Kazaa was upset because of the hypocrisy of the RIAA: Taking people to court at the same time as they were using Kazaa supplied information to learn about demographics (what type of songs sold the best in which areas).
SPIT! (that's me spitting on the RIAA). |
Re: [OT] Kazaa Sues RIAA
I whole heartedly believe that the record companies lost money because of the poor economy, bad business practices, and a shrinking exploitable consumer more so than because of mild p2p file swapping.
They see a way to control a method of distribution, and that ladies and gentalmen is their only intention here. They want to own the technology and the right to license its use to consumers at a substantical subscription rate. So yes, I too *spit* on the RIAA. |
Re: [OT] Kazaa Sues RIAA
Not to mention the RIAA putting "spin" (pardon the pun) on their actions by saying it was taking money out of artists pockets.
I read a detailed report several months back talking about how much an artist got per album sold (the average artist, not the "blockbusters") and it was pathetic AND money was subtracted from THAT for the recording company's expenses. So, most of the average bands have to tour to make money. What they get from the RIAA is insulting. Now, having said this, I don't use my hatred for the RIAA to ease my conscience and thus download music. I don't believe in taking things that aren't yours...whether the artists suffer or not. In fact, I'll be giving my wife a subscription to a legal download as one of her Christmas presents. The one by MusicMatch, I think. But it doesn't stop me from hating the a$$holes! |
Re: [OT] Kazaa Sues RIAA
I refuse to by anything the RIAA is involved in because of thier childish behavior.
Breaking the law to support the law is still breaking the law. Plus, how much of these court awarded damages go to the artist? I doubt more than a dime or two from each case. |
Re: [OT] Kazaa Sues RIAA
Zero actually. Courtney Love filed suit against her record lable for a portion of the damages from the Napster case (? I think...) and was stiff-armed. She got nada.
But that's normal. Record labels don't pay artists, they charge them for various 'services' (like use of the recording studio). Artists have to go on concert tours to actually make money. The more people learn about this lie by the record labels the better. |
Re: [OT] Kazaa Sues RIAA
The problem with the lie is, you have Groups like metallica and other promoting it.
They own the record company so therefore they stand to loose money. (Just a theory though.) Additionally, the record companies employ the RIAA to say that p2p file swappping is taking money away from the song artists. If you apply that standard to the movie industry then it would go something like this: p2p file swapping of movies is taking money away from the actors. The thing here though is Hollywood knows better than to try something like that. [ December 16, 2003, 21:05: Message edited by: CNCRaymond ] |
