Stupid question from a newbie PBW game host
Ummm...this is a stupid question, but I've gotta ask it:
I just took over an in-progress PBW game. Some spots were open. A player joined one of them. I accepted that player. Now that player is presumably going to download the turn and try to do it...but they will undoubtedly get a password error The former players is AWOL, so I need to re-set the password. So...do I have to tell the new player to wait for the next turn's results, and I'll run the turn manually at home and "reset passwords" for him and anyone else who joins, and then tell them the new password? Is there any way around this since I have already accepted him and he is undoubtedly wanting to do turns this turn.... Also, if I do need to do the turn manually, I'll need to get the game host password...I presume I can get that reset by the PBW admin bubbas? thanks, Alarik [ December 17, 2003, 12:27: Message edited by: alarikf ] |

Tra la la la la, la la la la...
anybody? I know it's a stupid question but I didn't see it answered in the PBW FAQ (although, inevitably, someone's going to say it is, then I'll look like a doofus, but I'm used to that. I ask driving directions when I'm lost too...) Thanks, Alarik |
Re: Stupid question from a newbie PBW game host
With Version 1.49, Malfador added the ability for the game owner to reset a player's in game empire password. This is very useful any time the in game password does not match what is on PBW, like if the player changed it and then forgot, or had to be replaced in the game and didn't tell anyone the password.
You have to run the turns offline to do this. Download the current turn files from the Game Admin screen and then log into the game as the game master. Click on the game menu button and then the options button. Then hit the reset passwords button and highlight the empires you want to reset passwords for. The game will pop up a box for each empire and give you the new password. Click ok and then close and then end turn. When the turn processes, unpload the files to the PBW as a replacment turn from the game admin screen and then email the player their new passwords. They can change that to something else if they want when they play the next turn. Yep, from the PBW faq, section 3.5 I don't know if this method works with gold, though. Good luck with your game. |
Re: Stupid question from a newbie PBW game host
Yep, that's how it works. If you need the game host password, email me and I'll send it to you.
By the way, you know for sure that the password for the empire taken over is wrong? You said it like you knew it, but didn't say the new player actually confirmed it as such. Geoschmo [ December 17, 2003, 16:23: Message edited by: geoschmo ] |
Re: Stupid question from a newbie PBW game host
OK, I'll email you to get the host password.
While I don't actually KNOW yet that the various empire's passwords are unknown, the former player's email bounces, and they haven;t turned in turns for many moons, so I'm pretty sure that they're permanently AWOL. I figure when I run the new turn offline, I'll reset all the passwords for unplayed empires... thanks, Alarik Quote:

Re: Stupid question from a newbie PBW game host
When a player takes over an empire, PBW emails him the password. Woefully, this is often incorrect because a previous owner of that empire has changed the password in-game but did not notify PBW using the "Update password" button. As far as PBW knows, there has been no change. In this case run the turn offline as discussed. I do think it's a good idea to change all the passwords of abandoned empires but for *censored* sake, write them down! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
Or better still, use the "Update password" button! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif [ December 18, 2003, 01:00: Message edited by: Grandpa Kim ] |
Re: Stupid question from a newbie PBW game host
Ah ha! See, stupid me, I had no idea that the site emailed the new replacement player the password. So, truly, I should wait to see if they are unable to do the orders for their new empire before willy-nilly resetting passwords...
