Trading / Post Cards

I am not much of a marketing guy, but would it not be a nice thing to have a set of SE IV trading cards and or post cards?

Think about it, a complete set of postcards and trading cards that have all the stock ships / races / weapons platforms / other in stuning detail.

Ok dumb idea, but what the hell, it is a slow post day.

How about a deck of playing cards? Use 4 races and place a pic of their ships on the front of each card. (I believe there are 13 ships for each race) Have the the colony ship as Ace and the other ships in order of biggest to smallest for the King down to the Two.

Or! We could get togeather and invent a whole new card game based on SE, (kind of like MTG where there would be all kinds of cards, (ie: shields, PDC's, Beam weapons, Faster engines etc.)

Using MTG as a reference, faster ships could have 'first strike', a ship could be enhanced with better weapons. play effect cards like nebula could also be made,.. Use research and intel cards as mana, you need 2 research and 1 intel to bring ship x into play,..

Hmmm, interesting idea? So, what do you people think. Is a Space Empires Trading card game a good idea?

Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Atrocities, this idea is your fault, you sparked my interest by talking about 'cards'. Now my brain is on fire. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

P.S. maybe if we make the SE Trading card game interesting enough, Aaron would like to make a computer Version after SE5. It would sure be a change of pace for him.

Wait, I see now, from Davids post. Ahhhh.

No what I was talking about is something a bit more dated than that. Just plain old collectors cards that you look at and trade. But game cards, now that is an idea I had not consider.

David that is a good idea, I mean why the hell not. It would give people something to do when the power is out. A board game based off of Space Empires would be very interesting.

I like the Playing Card idea too. LOL

"I have a full.... um, Attack fleet." (Full house)
"Hahaha to bad, my royal navy beats that all to hell!" (Royal Flush)

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Now there is a good example of how an idea can mutate and take on a life of it own..

You mention 'post-cards' and 'trading-cards',.. I mention a trading-card game like Magic the Gathering,.. You mention it's a good idea and say a Board Game would be interesting.

hmmm, for postcards to Board games in 4 easy steps. LOL

My train of thought is more on the MTG-ish card game.

The idea is each player would have to defend his home planet. there would be attack cards (ships) and 'resource' cards that are needed to bring them into play. conditional modifiers like nebulas, solar flares, etc. there could also be 'race' cards that give the player 'global' bonuses (like a mining race where each resource card produces +1 resource.) Ship cards can be made stronger by adding engine boosts, shields, firepower etc. Players attack each other's planets and the defending player has to use his own ships to defend. If a player has no ships then his home planet is hit for damage.

etc, etc... Feel free to add more ideas, this is jst the basics in a nutshell. The only thing to keep in mind is to stay with stuff already in SE. don't invent new stuff. THe fun will be in how we use what is available, not in the infinate possabilities of what can be done. We'll have the possability to 'mod' the game after the basic units are done.

Re: Trading / Post Cards

I can't help but think of Pokemon (which I have QUITE a few of) cards which most people collected and didn't really use to play with.

Accordingly, I'm more inclined to think of cards as detailed graphical representations for people who love the game as opposed to those who want some sort of playable game (that would fall short of the real thing).

That kind of defeats the purpose of buying game cards...
