OT: Best D&D RPG Game?

I know nothing about this genra at all. I bought Balder Gate a few years back and played it for a while but never really got into it. I have Diablo and Diablo II but never really played them much either.

I recently bought Dungeon Siege and have a copy of Dungeon Odessy.

I was looking for a game like Zelda and the Legend of Zelda but have not found one as of yet. BG and DS were both fun games I guess, but DS had some funky camera movies and BG just seem to loose my interest after a while.

What do these game offer to people? I mean what is the appeal to them. I play them for a bit and loose interest. I now have Kinghts of the old republic and right off I hate it. The character control is hidious and the game is over complicated and user unfriendly.

A good friend has recommended Never Winter Nights and another Morrwind, but I seriously don't know about either.

I mean if Balders Gate can't keep my interest, then nothing can.

I am an avid RPG player and the bulk of my games library is rpg games. You're right on with baldur's gate, it's a good game graphically, but the pace of the game is slow. So like you it failed to hold my interest for very long. Speaking of slow games, unless you like wait and see, or run like a turtle features stay away from Pools of Radiance: The ruins of Myth Draynor.

One of my favorite RPG/Strategy games is the Heroes of Might & Magic series. I have yet to find a game with more "just one more turn' power than that. (Before you bash me for placing HoMM before SE4, Remember we're talking about RPG games, and IMHO SE4 is a 4x space game.)

HoMM3 is the best one in that series, #4 looks nicer but has many things that detract from the gameplay. (this has more to do with my personal playing style.)

I would also recomend Might and Magic6 & 7 (forget 8 and 9 they were a bit disapointing.)

My 'A' list of RPG Games looks like this..

# 1) Ultima 4
# 2) Dungeon Master
# 3) Lands of Lore
# 4) Betrayal at Krondor
# 5) Sundog: The Frozen Legacy
# 6) Heroes of Might and Magic
# 7) Might and Magic 7
# 8) Might and Magic 6
# 9) Morrowind (huge game level gain is a bit slow)
#10) Diablo 1 & 2 % LoD (good Hack 'n Slash)

I heard that 'Age of Wonders is a very good game' and also heard good things about Neverwinter Nights and Planescape Torment. I will eventually get these, I'm just waiting for them to fall into the bargain bin. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

$0.02 from me to you, Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Thank you David for the info. I did not know there were so many RPG games out. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif They all seem so overwhelming.

I am just looking for a game that will draw me into it. A game that once I start playing I can forget about RL for a long while and just emerse myself in the gaming experience.

KotOR is not a bad game once you semi understand the atrocius control system.

The game has so many limitations and flaws that playing it is a real pain in the ***.

For example you are commanding the wookie, your better melay guy, and he comes acrossed a mine. You try to switch to your smart guy, but since the wookie saw the mine first, he is the one who has to deal with it. The same thing goes for combat, if the team member you are controlling sees and enemy, YOU MUST engage. I hate this. Also you can not pick who you kill, the game does that for you. So you can't wack the smart assed yuppy in the bar, nor the sith trooper who is in your way. You have to wait until the game says they are bad guys before you can attack, and you can only attack with the member of your team that you are control regardless of skill or health.

This game is horrible for the most part, but it is kind of fun. Let this be a lesson, all of the hype that this game is game of the year is utter BS, don't buy a game that is a port from a consule. You get what you pay for;

Poor controls, poor AI, poor player interaction, etc.

Sorry, I feel RPG's need eyeball contact.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Something is wrong with your brain. This is the hottest game that's come down the pike in years, and I love it.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Wrong. Once a mine is spotted, you can switch to any character to deal with it.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Also false. You can click the 'Disengage' button and cancel combat.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Read the manual. You can click on any enemy to target him. You are not stuck with whomever is spotted first, as long as another enemy is in your current character's LOS.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">This game was designed simultaneously for the PC and console market, unlike most games that are ported. It has excellent controls, but someone who is not familiar with RPGs will have a little learning curve with it. You should give it a chance.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">I think if you don't like RPGs in general, there is no pleasing you. Perhaps you should stick to other game types if RPGs are not your bag. I think KOTOR is the best RPG I have played in years, and I have played many.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">I'm still looking for that game. Like David, I have a large amount of my game library devoted to RPG's. Unfortunatley, most of them can't keep my attention for very long. My most recent game, Temple of Elemental Evil, I just can't find the time to even start. I'm still playing SE4G so much I can't find the time to start another type of game.
