Now realize that this is just like 'civilian' life -- it is estimated that 3/4ths of all rapes go unreported -- and yes, women are often punished in various ways for reporting sexual assault. So it's not that the armed forces are necessarily all that 'brutal and uncivilized' but that they are just like the population at large. Now you can get really disturbed.

And keep in mind that most of the command structure (at the upper levels) is male, so they do not really understand the trauma of the females being raped. So, they are not really the best trained/equipped to deal with the situation properly.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Well, if you read the article that I read, you would see that the assaults WERE reported and nothing was done about it.

Service Women Being Raped in Iraq on the climb and the US Military has virtually done nothing for them.

Quote:

The Post reported Last month that at least 37 female service members had sought counseling for sexual trauma and other assistance from civilian rape crisis organizations after returning from duty in Iraq, Kuwait and other overseas stations.

The women, ranging from enlisted soldiers to officers, reported poor medical treatment, lack of counseling and incomplete criminal investigations; some said they were threatened with punishment after reporting assaults.
<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">This is absolutely unacceptable behavior and it angers me to no end!

I want to post more about how angry I am over this, but I need to calm down first. The Military mind set on this subject is unquestionably the worst abuse of authority and professionalism in some time.

Some assaults were reported.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,110700,00.html

"Only 11 of the women reported being assaulted to military authorities, Hansen said."

If the actual number is 37 then that's about parallel with the 'civilian' 3:1 ratio of reports to actual incidents.

I heard there were more than 80 cases.

Pisses me off, too! (I'm retired from the army)

The only thing I can think of an up side is once after they idiots pulls their head out of their asses and start prosecute the turds that have done the rapes, then deal with them in a military prison. Things are a bit different there.

There's a lot that is going on in the world today that should disturb people. For an example that is on the flip side of the post about rapes in the army not being investigated, howabout this:

Feds win right to war protesters' records
- - - - - - - - - - - -
BY RYAN J. FOLEY
Feb. 7, 2004 | DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- In what may be the first subpoena of its kind in decades, a federal judge has ordered a university to turn over records about a gathering of anti-war activists.

In addition to the subpoena of Drake University, subpoenas were served this past week on four of the activists who attended a Nov. 15 forum at the school, ordering them to appear before a grand jury Tuesday, the protesters said.

Federal prosecutors refuse to comment on the subpoenas.

In addition to records about who attended the forum, the subpoena orders the university to divulge all records relating to the local chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, a New York-based legal activist organization that sponsored the forum.

etc....(rest of story at
http://www.salon.com/news/wire/2004/...ke/index.html)

edit: the point being, of course, that some are very ready to investigate that which they want to and not willing to investigate that which they fear looks bad. It's probably just a fact of life for the human animal when organized into governments and such...

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">One thing for sure...the news isn't always accurate:

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...sa_assaults_dc

(excerpt)

"The Pentagon said that in the Central Command region -- which includes Iraq and Kuwait as well as the Horn of Africa, the entire Gulf region and Central Asia including Afghanistan (news - web sites) -- the U.S. military had received reports in the past year of 88 cases of "sexual misconduct." Eighty involved Army soldiers, with seven from the Air Force and one from the Marines."

[edit] In fact, in the article you posted (further down), it references 80 cases being reported.
