Finite resources

I just started a new game with finite resources to see how things work. One thing I immediately noted is that instead of a value percentage for production of resources there is a tonnage of available resources to get. This begs the question how fast will you get these resources? Does the amount available have anything to do with the production? Finite resources really changes alot of the strategy of the game. Where before you would build as fast as possible to get as many turns of production as you could now it hurts you not at all to leave planets vacant and take your time building things since you will only get so much off each planet in any event. I usually ran out of storage space before but it didn't really bother me that much as long as I had plenty stored but now you certainly want to make sure you have more storage than you need at all times. You might even want to scrap facilities to prevent filling your storage up. Will see how it works out.

I just thought of another question. My personal race has a 10 percent mineral mining bonus. Does this bonus even matter in a finite resources game?

Yes, that mineral bonus matters. Resource facilities extract at the same base rate that they did before, except now they subtract from the total rather than multiply by the planet's value. In its current incarnation, I don't like finite resources. To my knowledge, your facilities will continue to bring in resources even when your storage is full. As such, it can actually be a BAD thing when you have a resource surplus. I'd prefer if your extractors would shut down when that resource type is fully stocked, but this could add lots of new and potentially buggy code to the game.

Yes I don't like finite resources at all the way it is either. Since you can't keep forever building storage especially early you have to try and balance your output all the time. Which is a pain in the rear because you have to do it everytime a planet runs out or you start building alot. I particularly don't like it because where before you could have planets especially small ones build a couple storage or research and be done with them you have to keep managing all the planets trying to get all the resources off. Another pain in the rear. And because you have to build miners on the small planets you end up in the catch 22 of having alot less places to build storage in the first place.

How is the AI in these games? Based on what I see in the AI files, it doesn't appear they would be a good opponent in these types of games b/c the AI does not reassess the planets periodically like a human opponent would need to.

I didn't pay attention to the AI, but I'm willing to bet that it would be even weaker than in an Ancient Galaxy. And that's pretty sad.
