CD Project

I don't know how well this will go over, but do any of you think it would be a good idea to combine all of the extra materials together and burn them onto CD with the intent of making copies of it available to those who will pay for S&H and the cost of the CD and jewel case?

Of course copy-writed material can not be used, but that only accounts for a very small portion of the overall content that is available.

With Malfadors permission of course, include the images from the Image Mod, fan produced Ships sets, AI's, mods, graphics, etc.

Like I said I don't know if this is a good idea or not, but if it could be organized and done through the cooperation of all contributers, it would be an impressive accomplishment to be sure.

The Image Mod is filled with copyrighted images...

It would be nice to be able to unzip one file and get the latest Version of all mods, the image mod, and the mod launcher all in the right place and all working.

I suppose it wouldn't be too big a deal for someone to setup a torrent for Online distribution. (Is anyone else here a fan of legal uses for bittorrent?)

CD-based distribution could work as well, but once again you'd need someone with the time (and money) to burn all of the CD's

The CD idea is probibly not fesable. To much work and $ cost. But still if someone where to to organize such a project, and only billed for ship and handling plus the cost of the CD and jewel case, then profit does not play into it. If the material on the CD was not copy righted, and what material was included was done so with the written permission of its creator/developer, then why not?

Again its probibly not a feasable idea.

The thing is, and perhaps someone with some legal skill could address this, if the material can be downloaded for free, why can it not be burned to a cd and given away for free? The only cost would be the cost of the cd, jewel case and shipping. No profit would be made. I guess it goes back to distribution of copy righted material, but like I said, downloading it from a web site is also considered distribution.

Re: CD Project

I guess another way of doing it would be to provide the cd free of charge for a contribution to the support of providers web page.

Say donate $10 us for the up keep of X web site, and in return, out of appreciation, you recieve the CD.

No profit at all is attributed to the CD therefore the distribution of the material, if freely available on the web, and if taken to court, would not hold up legally.

If it can be downloaded for free thus obtained for free, then the method of obtaining it, so long as it was free, cannot be successfully challenged.

If it were to go to court, and I sincerely doubt it, it would most likely be thrown out, or at most, ruled in favor of the defendant.

Again, if it can be obtained free of charge via a download, then obtaining it via a free CD is would essencially be the samething.

Ask Fyron about it. Do not discuss it on the forum. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

In that case Fyron I guess that material would have to be excluded or offered at a risk. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif
