Robotech
/me beats head against wall.
I wish I knew what to say here... What an awful awful awful series this is. The Malcross is crewed by idiots, and captained by an uber moron. Simply put I now know where Lucas got his lame dialog for AotC from. Geeze what a horribly written series. My God if you doubt me just rent the series from Netflix and try and watch it. I thought my writing skills sucked, OMG, my material is award winning compared to this crap. The show could have been a great series if not for the horrible horrible lame arse stupid writing and uber horrible lack of attention to detail. In a nut shell this series might have some cool ships, but it has no other appeal to it. Why I decided to rent the series is beyond my comprehension. |
Re: Robotech
Hmmm...
because you wanted to design a Robotech shipset for SE IV? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |
Re: Robotech
Holy Bitterness Batman! Try not to judge it too harshly. While it may not live up to the expectations we have now try to remember the time in which it was made. TV has gotten a lot smarter over the decades. Have you ever tried watching the reruns of your favourite childhood shows? The Dukes of Hazzard? MacGyver? V? Three's Company? At the time these shows were some of the best/edgiest/funniest things on TV. What are they now? ****e, all of it. By todays standards at least. And this is actual TV.
The cartoons and japanimation of the time was even worse. Grandizer, G-Force, Blackstar, and Thundarr the Barbarian. Horrible, horrible shows by any standards. Flat characters, repetitive animation, slow-witted dialogue, and ship crews that are collectively smart like rock. Now among these dregs (which were still some of the coolest things to grace the eyes of an eight year old) there was Robotech. Now here were cool transforming robots coupled with a pretty advanced (comparatively at least) love/war story. It wasn't the same good vs. bad, badguy gets-away-to-repeat-scenario-with-slightly-different-dialogue-next-episode sort of thing. It was a show that demanded more of its audience, even if its audience was primarily prepubecent boys. It was a great thing for the time. And it was only the first third of the entire series (the other parts being Southern Cross and Invid Invasion). That being said, I have to agree that it is somewhat... disapointing by todays standards. I sat down and rewatched the entire Macross series toward the end of high school and I was slightly dissillusioned. Try to watch such things while surrounded with the heady buzz of nostalgia. You know, the same thing that allows people to say that Citizen Kane was the greatest movie ever made without choking on their own words. |
Re: Robotech
The thing is I guess, it could have been a lot better but given it was originally written in japanese, translated into english by some expatriot, and then proof read by some japanese guy to make sure the supidity came through clearly, says a lot.
Oh well. I am seriously surprised that Robotech has not been developed into a full blown movie franchise by now. I mean with all the CG ability that we now have, with some decent script writing and some good direction the Robotech serious would make a fine moive series. Hell get the guy who did the LOTR trillogy to do it. That would be very interesting. |
Re: Robotech
Robotech and Starblazers are what made me aware of and interested in Anime. I even prefer Robotech to most modern anime. I havn't got much access to anime programs, most of my viewing was from the foreign programs channel, so I was interested when I stayed with my sister who had cable. I was dissapointed in the modern anime I saw as they lacked an epic feel (huge fleets with many mechs) and seemed more interested in the psychological feelings one character has felt towards another for the Last 10 episodes or so. I suppose its just the Japanese. They see the violence as nothing special and are more interested in developing the characters, which I don't care about.

Heh, sounds like you'd like non-RPed SE4 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif They've got a star-killer... lets send 200 ships in, so they use it, and then hit 'em with an 800 ship second wave http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |
Re: Robotech
Actually I prefer to RP my empires and I write stories to portray them both in NGC4 (havn't done much lately) and Ultimate (where I seem to be the only one, as well as the only person who reads them I think http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif )
http://e3.lemdal.com/se4/forum/viewt...ca7a50fa884604 I'm all for progressing the plot with character interaction. But I find boring the incessant love triangles and male character getting big red cheeks and cheesy grin when he sees his object of affection. PS. I just finished this post when the forums went down. |
