Evil Java Scripts / Pop Up Installs

Ok, how do you tell if one of these bastards has infected your system? I was web surfing just now looking for a info on something and well end up on a porn site and was spammed pretty heavily. I got a few warnings that a Jav script was attempting to install itself, but I have no idea if that was a real warning or something designed by the java script to get me to OK its install.

HELP.

I use Firefox.
One of my systems is infected with CoolSearch and Spider. I have used Spybot, CW Schredder, and Ad aware. None completely remove them the spyware do seem to be disfunctional. IE is mildly affected so I only use it when I have to.

or use Mozilla, that's what I'm using. Firefox didn't seem to 'feel' right when I tried it. Both will stop the nasty pop-up spam and hijackers.

Cheers!

Use Proxomitron and Mozilla Firefox (don't listen to David about his "feel" of Firefox, he is just silly http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ) in tandem and your browsing will be very safe.

Get Ad-Aware (there is a free Version that scans only, doesn't offer constant protection) and Spybot Search and Destroy to remove crap from your system. They each catch things that the other misses. Sbybot has a handy immunize feature that is supposed to help prevent some things from getting installed in the first place.

Why send him to the German site for AdAware? They have a US site, they are a US company! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Make sure to get the latest reflist, too, so you can remove the latest spyware. The program has an update function built-in.

Other than that, I can agree with everything Fyron said. I personally prefer the full Mozilla suite, though. There's supposed to be an update of Mozilla/Firefox released very soon. Within the next few days. There is a security problem in the SSL code dating back to Netscape 4.7 that urgently needs to be fixed. So keep checking for the update even if you get Mozilla/Firefox now.

Edit:

In addition to Proxomitron, you might want to get the 'JD5000 Filters' which are much more comprehensive than the default Proxomitron filters.

Anyway, all these hax0rz's tricks are targeted against IE vulnerabilities, so the major advice is "do not use Internet Explorer". This will solve 80% of problems.

P.S. BTW it IS just my silly opinion that Firefox has little to offer over Mozilla. (feel free to list the multitude of features that I wouldn't use anyway.) But in my defense, if the 'added features' are not something I need or would use then Firefox is a useless upgrade. Besides Mozilla is working fantastic. why would I want to change or upgrade something that is not broken or otherwise 1000% better than IE?

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">The only difference I've noted between Firefox and the fuller Mozilla suite is that the Mozilla suite doesn't allow the use of the middle mouse button (ie: click down on the mouse wheel), which is usually good for rapidly scrolling up and down a screen. Maybe it's just with my mouse, but for some reason Mozilla won't allow it, but Firefox does. Go figure.

The two browsers in in fact different programs. It's just the 'Gecko' HTML engine that is shared between them. So, it's not surprising that there are features they don't have in common.
