Newbie question

Hello Everyone,
This is my first experience with one of these 4x games. Actually the only other one i played was Ascendancy which was a long time ago. I purchased Space empires 4 after reading several reviews and coming to this great board. Now my question:

After creating a ship, i forgot to place ion engines on it ( i know, dumb dumb dumb ) while following the tutorial .....now is there any way to refit engines on this ship or to i have to scrap this one and queue up a new one with a new design?

thanks for any help....

Re: Newbie question

You can retrofit ships. The rules are --

- You cannot change the hull size.

- The difference in cost between the designs (current, not original, in case it was retrofitted before; versus new) cannot exceed a certain threshold: 50%, as in Data/Settings.txt. In one game, I had enemy ships going through up to three consecutive retrofits to conform to one of my own (much MUCH more expensive) designs...

- You have to be able to afford the possibly large refit cost.

- The replaced parts will all be *damaged*, so it'll have to spend some time being repaired ('tho at least *that* is free AFAICT).

To do so, you'll need to create a similar design with the ion engines, on the same hull. Then, since the ship is presumably still at a shipyard planet (i.e. you didn't scrap the shipyard, most likely), you can select the ship, hit the Refit/Scrap/Analyze button (it looks like a green Recycling symbol by itself), select the ship in the left panel, hit Retrofit, select the new design, and OK it.

Re: Newbie question

Simply put, yes you can. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

If you have not built the ship yet, you can simply EDIT The design and add the engines.

If you have built the ship, you can redesign it, with the engines, rename it "your design name" and "A" for example. Then simply retorfit the ship you built.

Go back to the design screen, and make the old design obsolete. I have "Hide Obsolete" selected in my game, so when I make something obsolete, its gone from my design window.

Hope this helps.
