Planet Types

Is there a difference in the frequency of certain planet types/atmospheres when a map is created?

i.e. Are more rock planets created, less Gas (but larger), etc.??

Thanks in advance...

If I understand the SectorTypes.txt file correctly, the answer is "NO".

Re: Planet Types

actually, I believe the answer is 'yes'

you need to look at the system types file, which will tell you how many of what kinds of planets are created per system. the sector type file just tells you 'system 1' or 'system 2' or 'system 3'

even so, it would be nice to know how it (randomly?) generates planets when not otherwise specified.

It can make a nice difference too. Try playing on an ancient map. You'll be racing up that Stellar Manipulation tree before long, trying to convert those asteroid fields into something big enough to stand on!

It just seems to me that there are alot of Rock planets. The Ice tend to be small... and the Gas tend to be Large.

Just wondering if there was any solid info on this.

All I know for certain is that Gas Giants only come in large and huge, and they always have an atmosphere. If you don't play with the "all starting worlds the same size" option turned on you can get a massive head start by living on a gas giant. Like nearly twice the resources and tech of non gas giant races on the first turn.

Nyx, I recently discovered this tactic myself (so far only in the demo - when WILL that game arrive?). Starting as a gas world colonizer w/Methane/Hydrogen/CarbonDioxide (I think these are the correct types - haven't noticed many Oxy gas giants) gives quiet a bit of an advantage.
When I meet another race, odds are they are Rock or Ice types and I simply demand their colonization tech from em - never been turned down yet. Opens up a world of, well, worlds.

In the full game, with the equal start option turned on, you still have a good reason to play gas giants as you will always get to have at least 4 facilities on each world.

Rock with no atmosphere is also fun because all those tiny rock moons with no atmosphere hold 5 facilities. But there are so few larger worlds with no atmospheres that it's not such a great idea over all.

Nyx-

Gas Giants do come in Medium size, they are just rare to see.
