Super newbie help
 

Just played Space Empires for the fist time, sweet looking game. Only problem is, I couldn't figure out how to do anything. I established trade treaties and such with other races, researched technology, but I was never able to use the technology for advanced buildings, and I could never build any units. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you talking about your colony or any planets in general? I usually build the level 1 facilities and spend most of my research points on upgrading ship essentials.

Before you can build ships or other mobile units, you need to design them first. Did you go through that process?

As for the facilities, you can put them in the construction queue for a planet if you have room for new facilities there. If not, you can either scrap things or upgrade existing facilities to newer designs.

If you haven't tried the tutorial yet, give it a shot. It's pretty informative on the basics.

yea i figured out the ship part, but like I researched and discovered a level 2 starport, but never had the opportunity to use it. I could only build level one objects.

For units (troops, fighters) you need to research construction and then the specific unit type. You also need to research smaller and troop weapons. Then select unit under design. You should beable to upgrade all facilities by selecting the upgrade button on the construction que screen.
Note it will take about 1 turn for every 2 facilities you upgrade and will not be done until all of that type are finished.

And a warning when you're upgrading production facilities -- you do not seem to gain any resources from them, at least during the turn(s) they're being upgraded, so make sure you have a healthy amount of the resource first.
