How Would You Rate The Design Minister?

I turned on the design minister so I wouldn't constantly have to update ship designs. It seems like the AI just wants to use one weapon type on a ship no matter which weapons are available. Is it better to create your own designs or is the design minister capable enough?

I find ship creation a very fun part of the game http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif
I've never used any of the ministers actually http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Judging from AI ship design, I'm not too impressed. It undervalues the power of cloaking (and the need for sensors), and the vulnerability of missile ships when your opponents are much faster than the missiles...

Besides, it probably doesn't share my perverse sense of humor. What are the odds it would consider, say, a base ship with layers and layers of organic armor, which attacks solely by ramming ("If you have a big enough ship, everything looks like a bug. Welcome to my windshield.")?

I don't use it, because I feel that my own designs are better than the ones it creates. For example, when fighting baseships, you should always put an engine destroyer on your ships, as baseships only have two engines.

and guaranteed he chickened out.
