What about weaponmounts for things other than weapons?

I'm wondering if there is any way to create weaponmount type specials for non-weapon components.

I'm hoping to create some sorts of "Heavy Armor" and the like, but the data files seem to say that only weapon components get special mounts.

Hmm. Interesting idea. That concept would be really neat for heavier shielding for larger ships. I'll send this in as a suggestion to Malfador. Good idea, Smiloid!

This is another feature I've been requesting for months. The one thing that I don't like about SE ship design is that every component is an "atom" that cannot be adjusted for the ship it is being installed in. Weapon mounts finally break this restriction. You know that a mount set to type "None" will already affect non-weapon components? Problem is, it can be used for anything: ECM, Engine, whatever. Which is silly. Also, the damage power of weapons is the only thing that can currently be adjusted. If there were mounts that could adjust shield points and armor's 'emissive' ability, you could have an incredibly flexible ship design system that could produce really impressive capital ships. So, go right ahead and request it. It seems that what beta testers want isn't enough. There has to be a mass movement to get MM to do something new. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Baron, I don't think it's that what the beta testers want isn't enough. I think the beta testers want so much MM just doesn't have time to add it all. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif At least judging from all the comments you beta testers have on the line of "Yeah, we asked for that but it didn't make the cut". But there's also alot of "We wanted it and it's there" so that supports my point of view nicely methinks. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Yep I asked for that when weapon mounts were first introduced. Shield and armor mounts would be nice. Engine mounts might require the current engine be done differently though.

Uh I know this will start a discussion but I think everyone has the wrong idea about the weapon mounts. I think they are not bigger weapons but same sized weapons grouped together and having linked targeting. Like the turret mounts on naval ships. The damage bonus results from the fact that these weapons are hitting almost the same point rather than hitting with more energy. Also I think each weapon is a system not just a single weapon.
If you use this as what a mount is then you can see that using these for items other than weapons not making much sense. IMHO

IMHO, weaponmounts would be much broader than that.. They can basically mean anything from a simple bigger and badder Version to a tight grouping to a radically different twist on an existing design.

If mounts were designed for every component type and each mount had different advantages/disadvantages, the possibilities for ship design would be incredible!

For example, overdriven engines that produce extra speed, but are incredibly volatile.. I.E. If an engine is destroyed KABOOM! bye-bye ship entirely! (Can we say engine killing weapons? Its just a thought)
