Comm Channels and Trade

Every time I need some technology, I give the AI some comm channels, and they accept all the time. Why are comm channels so important to them?

Comm channels allow the AI to talk to races they haven't contacted as of yet. Allows you to trade without having to worry about being attacked since they don't know where you are.

My suggestion would be to play with Tech trading turned off. Many of the techs you trade to an AI player are never even used. Its just one more advantage a human will have over the AI and I dont think anyone needs more advantages. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Also, IMO its kind of silly to trade techs like that. It encourages all kinds of wheeling and dealing between human players as well and I dont think its appropriate for the level and the scale of the game. The research sharing is close enough in my book.

But, the beauty is: to each his/her own!

Wow trading comm channels! I didn't know you could. Sounds like SMAC.

1. Can you ask for them from others? How? Through normal trade requests or what??

2. How do you know which / who's comm channels the other has??

3. I know with SMAC having the other factions comm channels can give you very significant advantages over the others. Are there big advantages in SE4 also??

A player who's focused on espionage may well want to get comm channels; methinks it gives him the ability to steal resources, et al, from a player who will (without doing some diplomacy / espionage of his own) have no idea where the spy is.
