Mod Mystification-- plz help!
 
Hello everybody,
as a relatively new SE4 enthusiast I just downloaded all the files from the mod section.
Where to start now? What is considered an 'essential' mod and what falls more into the 'experimental' Category??
A short primer would be very appreciated.

Welcome to SEIV.

Firstly don't use my race characteristics mod as it won't work properly as I found out later. I will make a new Version eventually as I've learned a lot of new things about SEIV in the process.

I've tried out Derek's Mod which includes many new missiles and hull types and incorporates many of the mods together. Unfortunately the AI hasn't been changed yet to use the new components (actually it hardly uses any of the special weapons that come with game for that matter, so it's probably not too important).

I am just putting on Mephisto's Mod now but havn't had a chance to try it out. His includes one new race and fixes a lot of general problems with the AI.

I did try TampaGamer's Darlok race but later in the game, to my dismay, I find out they were stuck behind a black hole.

I'm working on a new Quandrant type called 'Computer Player Heaven'. It eliminates black holes and makes sure there are enough good mineral planets to keep the AI happy. I should have it up shortly.

All the data files are pretty straightforward but there can be a lot of unforseen changes that will occur with mods. I think any of the modders would like to hear from players what they liked about them or any bugs they found in them.

Ah, another from CM here!

for a start I would d/l Mephisto's EA and Tampa's Darlok's.

There is also a Klingon set (i'll put up a link in this post when I find it again) that is good and a Borg one by jonas. these are all complete race sets.

There is also a Xenophobe speech file if you want to use it for a Xenophobe (or nasty neighbor) race.

as for other mods, I would wait until next week when the MOD Consortium, puts a compiled MOD set, which will have MOD's of the Sergetti, the darlok's and EA, at least, plus some others (some of the .txt scripts, IIRC will be changed somewhat to help the AI.
