Engines

I was playing Starfury yesterday and when I was selling my loot at spacedock something occured to me. There are many engines in the game but all they do is produce propulsion. I was thinking that it would be great if the engines could have other attributes. And negative energy production. (energy drain) The energy drain could be explained by required power to keep the engines running when firing weapons. Or something like that.

For example Ion engine could be the most basic engine and would only give propulsion and has energy drain. Jacket-Photon engines could give propulsion, have power drain and boost ship's defensive abilities like extra ECM. And so on...

I don't know, how does the idea sound?

I was also thinking of different shield generators. For examples one which would direct some of the damage to energy like absorbing armor.

Re: Engines

For my (slowly being worked on) mod, I have the engines giving accleration, speed, and turning. That way when they are damaged ships don't do that stupid little dance, they just sit there.

Power drain works, to a point; it doesn't start until you fire your first weapon, and I'm not sure what happens if your energy hits full after that.

Re: Engines

My suggestion would be this

Has wot Ph-D has done with accleration, speed, and turning (will be doing this in the ppls mod anyway as its makes logical sense)

But dont have the energy related to engines, instead have it explained like so

"That power bar is the reserved energy for weapons, engines generate their own energy through advanced engine technology"

Makes sense?

Re: Engines

Nice ideas fellas. What about being able to "over load" the engine....like the engine will give you an extra boost and go very fast but the catch is the engine will be suvearly damaged or even destroyed.

Re: Engines

There are a few "destroyed on use" abilities... don't think any of them give extra bursts of speed, but there *are* ones for extra shields and extra weapons energy, so you can give your engine one or both of those abilities so you can "Divert full power to shields!" http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Really?I didn't know that...

Re: Engines

If you do that you just have to be -really- careful of where you right click in the ship interface. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Don't want to trigger your engine at the wrong time.

Re: Engines

So there really is an ability like this.To use it i have to right click ( amm what, shields, armors and engines? )

So it would be in ship interface window, haa? Wouldn't that jettison the object?

Re: Engines

If that would only destroy the engines then that would be perfect because it gives the crew something to do. (repairs)

I like turning, acceleration idea. By the way, does the game have a cloaking device? It does have tachyon sensors but do they actually have any use?

Re: Engines

No, the tacyon sensors don't have any use. MM was going to add cloaking and a lot of other things but apparently those plans fell through.

If you use a "destroyed on use" component, it isn't just destroyed- it vanishes. No repairs possible.
