Re: dom2 map editor and dominion1 maps

Wouldnt it be easier to add the
#dom2title Europa
#domVersion 175
#defaultmapzoom 1.5
to the original europa.map? If you copy the aran map to europa then you have to redo all the terrains also. Otherwise it will be declaring a province to be water when it isnt, and land when its actually water. If you keep the original .map (if it had neighbor commands in it) then the neighbors will be fine.

There is still the thing about the string of dots in the upper left corner which Dom2 will at minimum consider that white dot to be a capital.

Re: dom2 map editor and dominion1 maps

It's not too hard.

Remember to edit the TGA and take out the capital designator pixel in the top right. Otherwise this will generate a province up there.

I tried to edit my old "Fantasy North America" map using the demo, but got frustrated. With the map editor from Dom2 full Version I am slowly doing the conVersion. Expect about two weeks conVersion time.

The provinces get numbered differently, so if you have special provinces with stuff in them... you will have to move the stuff to the new number.

You also must do some fuddling with the "defaultmapzoom" to make sure there are no undersized provinces. Dom2 packs a bunch of icons into the provinces and some small DomI provinces will overflow if you fail to adjust the defaultmapzoom.

That said, the map tool is great. I could scan in a picture of almost anything and make a map of it. I'm actually suprised that the game shipped with so few maps considering the ease of making them.

I downloaded a random Dominions I map (20nov00L) and gave the create a new map a try. It did indeed crash for me too (usually the bugs are too scared to appear on my computer too). It seems that having a capital very near the upmost pixels of the image will crash the editor. So try removing the color key before doing a 'guess all neighbors'. It is the neighbor guessing that does the crash by the way (it guesses automatically during create a new map).

There were sites that you could get aerial photographs from. And another that had maps for continents with the nations drawn out. Yet another collected fantasy maps from every game and book series you could think of. Those would all import nicely.

I printed out the eye.tga and have it next to my machine. Ive been looking thru my old games to try and find one that does random map generation with something close to those icons. The ones Ive found dont seem to export nor can I zoom out for a screen capture. Ive also looked for generic map generators Online but havent found anything close enough.

(Especially in comparison to DOM1) ?

This would be a great help when converting old maps ... .

It seems to be latitude-major, with southernmost provinces receiving the lowest number (the reverse of Dom I). I don't yet know how ties in latitude are broken, although it would be pretty easy to make a test map to check.

dom2 map editor and dominion1 maps

ok I have found a way to make things work
1-take the tga from dominions1(europa.tga for example) and put it in the \map directory

2-make a copy of aran.map and rename it to europa.map

3-open europa.map with a text editor

4-change theses lines:
#dom2title Aran
#imagefile aran.tga
To these(Europa should be the name of your tga file):
#dom2title Europa
#imagefile europa.tga

5-You could change other things there (like description for example) but that's not the point

6-let's not change the rest
we'll change it later from inside dominions 2

7-well it's finished simply load your map within the editor (but now the most hard work awaits you: you have to redo all neigbours !!!!)

PS: for those of you who said it's difficult to convert to dominions2, I must say http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif
(joke inside http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif )

Re: dom2 map editor and dominion1 maps

oh ! and if you have done some maps
make them available to all

personnally I'm trying
remaking the europa.tga file to be a little easy to read (currently provinces are too small while flags of provinces too big)
