What shield do you guys prefer to equip your commanders and why?
 

A few that come to mind are:

Charcoal Shield, Shield of the Accursed & Scutata Volturnus. What shields should I go for? Suggestions?

For what type of commander? Supercombatant? Caster? How encumbered is he already?

Depending on the spheres, if he uses trample or not to attack, has other magic resistance items and such: A brief list of quick, good shields include.

Lucky Coin
Lead Shield
Eye Shield
Lantern Shield

Can you explain why these are better than the others I listed? The other shields actually do damage to your attackers, that's why I prefer them.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Lucky Coin - No Enc, Luck, decent Protection 2, Defense 3. Unless your SC has picks in Astral the only way he can get Luck is from an item. I usually prefer using Faithful if he can trample, since it frees up another slot but the Coin is nearly as good. Later in the game you want to script the really good spells and having a way to put a good spell on your SC without having to take the time to cast it is always nice.

Lead Shield - Gives MR. I'm a fan of MR, especially on SC's. I would only pick this shield if I couldn't get myself an Amulet of Antimagic or I didn't care about Enc.

Eye Shield - Takes out the eyes of those who hit the SC. Not as effective as Astral Shield; it is nonetheless very useful against mages and other SC, if you get close they attack you instead of casting their scripted spells.

Lantern Shield - Summons Corpse Candles, I like equipment that summons for free at the start of battle; especially for Assassinations.

Vine Shield is good since it entangles everyone who attacks the wielder so they are easier to kill & can't attack so good.
