How do I edit the .map file to give a commander gems? #additem "???"

Commander will get a handful of gems if you give them random items. A higher value gives them more gems.

Is there any way to give a commander or better yet a nation a starting bank of a certain type of gem?

There are certain equipment that will give gems. And certain magic sites. You can use those to gaurantee a gem income to a nation.

Certain units will come with a large gem collection (I dont remember any examples) so assiging them as an extra commander at startup is a way to provide a one-time boost.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">I think only Merc Mages come with a starting bank of gems.
