National Theme

What exactly is the theme? I've read different, oblique references to this concept but can't get my thick skull around it.

I'm a proud new owner of DOM2 and enjoying it very much.

Re: National Theme

Welcome!

A theme is an option you choose from the scales section of the pretender creation screen. Some themes (restless worshipers) are available to ALL nations. Some nations also have nation specific themes (such as Iron Faith for Ulm).

Nation Specific themes change the nation by altering the default units as well as often requiring certain scales to be set at certain levels (Iron Faith Ulm gets better priests and sacred units but loses it's smiths and is required to have a Drain scale >=1 for example).

The Nation Themes are a fun way to play a nation you like in a whole new way and some (Pangaea's Carrion Woods Theme for example) alter the nation so much it's essentially a new nation.

Thanks!

I missed that since I've only created 2 pretenders so far. I create the PG then play several games/maps.

I appreaciate this responsive forum.

"Theme" is sort of an unofficial name that's been coined around the fourm. It refers to the special dominions that are available when designing your god, such as the aforementioned Iron Faith for an Ulmish god.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">They're not just special dominions (most are not even special dominions), since national themes usually change the set of available national units and starting sites.

Aye, I agree, but you need to click "Select special dominion" to get the full list of available choices, so it is also best for people to know how the game references the concept.
