Mercenaries question
 

I'm playing a game now where I've been failing to get some mercenaries and I have 2 questions:

1) If I bid and don't win do I just lose the gold?

2) If I bid more than some mercenaries are asking for and they don't accept, shouldn't it be because another nation hired them?

I ask because I've bidded more for some mercenaries who have not accepted, kept the money, and offered their services AGAIN the next turn at a cut rate! If I lose the gold, shouldn't I get the mercenaries?

(1) No. But you lose the *use* of the gold in the turn in which you bid...you get it back next turn if you lose.

(2) Yes it should be...but...

You may be ignoring the fact that mercenaries are employed from a specific territory, and if that territory is taken from you, you lose the mercenaries.

Some folks gamble that they will win the battle they face the next turn and hire from provinces they do not yet own. Others might not be paying attention and hire from a border province next to a large enemy army which is taken before the mercenary can be employed.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">They are not as loyal/greedy in the 2.06 patch. So you can't base your strategy on drowning all mercenaries for your competitors anymore http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
