Re: Changing Amount Of Systems

Independent of your hardware configuration, you must edit data\settings.txt so the following line reads:

Maximum Number of Systems := ***

where *** is a integer not greater than 255.

Secondly, you must edit data\systemnames.txt so it has at least as many system names as the value you entered above. If you look in the mods forum here, you'll find some custom systemname files that people have already modded.

If you're getting an out of memory error due to a hardware problem or for some other reason, I can't help you. Maybe someone else will chime in.

Hope this helps and yep, it is a great game. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Even with the minimal hardware recommended by MM it should be possible to rise the sytem number without problems. I play in quadrants with a maximum system number of 250 an did not have any difficulties. My hardware is just a pentium II, 233MHz, 32MB RAM!

255 systems sounds like very hard-core gamer to me. Huh.

I never play large galaxies http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/ima...ons/icon12.gif

Re: Changing Amount Of Systems

Do *NOT* set the max number of systems to 255.

There is a bug in the current Version of the game that doesn't handle 255 systems correctly. Here is the relevant line from one of Richard's(of Shrapnel Games) Posts:

posted 27 January 2001 01:30

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The latest since 1.19.
Version 1.21:
1. Fixed - Range check error when you have 255 systems and you give
a ship orders to move to another system.
...

edit->Just a quick clarification. The current Version is 1.19 (after Patch 2). The 'Fixed' part above and the reference to 1.21 means Patch 3 which is not out yet.

I started up a game with 255 systems and tried to move my ship to another system. I got the Range Check Error (RCE) and had to abort the entire game, change the Max # of system down to below 255. In my case, I changed it to 200 because this particular RCE was really, really painfully annoying.

Hope I can spare you the pain...

Just saw on the 'Neutral Challenge' topic where Zanthis said he set the Max # of Systems to 254.

Those of you playing in huge galaxies. Does 254 prevent the RCE?

Thanks.

Re: Changing Amount Of Systems

I think 254 would prevent it
I use 250 systems
plus a System names from somewhere I got

Re: Changing Amount Of Systems

Yes, 254 systems works fine. I've been using it for weeks now. You have to have at least that many names in the system names file, though, or you will have some systems with no name. Any place the system name would normally appear will just be a blank - planets in unnamed systems will have just a Roman numeral. It doesn't cause any errors, just confusion for you.
