Hello, from a soon to be newb?

Just visiting from the Space Empires IV forum. I'm seriously thinking of buying D2. I liked Master of Magic, Homm3, Warlords 3. My wife bought me Warlords 4 for Chrismas but it just seems kinda shallow and not fun (golly, gee thanks hon!). It sounds like their isn't a random map generator (not a deal killer for me) but... I really wish their was. Game sounds complex but replayable. You all sound happy with it. So... give me sales pitch or tell me how much fun your having.
Friends don't let friends play RTS!

1) Download the demo.
2) Get past the learning curve
3) Learn to live without sleep.

It is, and it is. So the same map doesn't really get old.

You like HoMM3 and MoM but disliked HoMM4... so you'll like this.

P.S. There's a demo, ya know. It fairly represents the game, unlike a lot of demos I've tried.

A sales pitch? Okay.

The first thing you get to do is figure out which of seventeen nations you want to lead. They vary from a C'thulhu-ian water nation to the legions of the undead to the creatures of the forest to Heavy Armor... and everything in between. Then you hand-pick your powers, from mighty Titan to arcane scholar either dabbling with or mastering any of eight spheres of magic. And that's all before you start your first game.

Here comes the challenge. Can you discover which units to build, which spells to cast, which nation/pretender you feel most comfortable with - all before you give up? If so, you're ready to go ever deeper with your nation into more options, different pretenders and more complex strategies. And when you've finally gotten a good feel for one nation, there's sixteen more to try and a dozen nation themes as well.

It's one of those rare "one more turn" games. I can't think of any higher honor to bestow.

SE4 is like that. My wife will surely file for divorce now. The kid, the dog? oh yeah I forgot to feed them, I'll get right on it hon. I'll DL the demo, but I've pretty much made my mind up to get it.

Well i'm one of the biggest complainers and I still say its worth your money (especially if you never played Dom1)

Besides in what other games can you make an army of dragons to go crush those pathetic peasants who dare steal your gem resources ;p

MoM is one of my all time favorite games. I have played Age of Wonders 1 and 2, which while functionally very similar to MoM just didn't have the same kind of feel.

Despite being functionally almost entirely different from MoM, Dom2 "feels" the most like MoM to me. I can't really put my finger on what it is.

I am really enjoying Dom2, my only real irritation is when I am doing a battle replay and see 20 Groups of 1 shortbow fire a single arrow the entire length of a battlefield 1 at a time while I am waiting for my troops to roll right over them ( ugh ).

Actually come to think of it, the cavalier attitude that my mages have towards any gems that I give them also annoys me, a cast spells (no gems) command would be nice 8)

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">That would DEFINETLY be a problem except for one thing. As the game progresses it takes longer and longer to process a turn. That lets you notice things like bladder, hunger, thirst, nighttime, missing family members, etc etc.
