sorry for my ignorance, but what is this text mode and what is it good for?

--textonly is a commandline switch so that when you start dominions, it graphicless and only contains text.

But Gandalf, how on earth are you getting it to work? It refuses to work on my computer. When I add -T or --textonly, the game just doesn't start up:

"C:\Program Files\Dominions 2\dom2.exe" --port 1111 --tcpserver --noclientstart --textonly -q DomNet1

I cant find my notes on it now. But I could try and make it work again. I dropped it because it didnt do what I wanted.

You know it doesnt make the game host load any smaller or faster? It really serves no purpose unless you are trying to host from a computer where the graphic card doesnt support the game.

It should work, but you won't get any output (text or graphics) at all. So if you start a text server in windows it will be invisible and to make it exit you will have to use the alt+ctrl+del taskmanager.

It was intended as a way to host a dominions server on Linux boxes without requiring any graphics resources. Should work just as fine on OS X and Solaris.

I thought --textonly meant you would be able to see "text".

On linux it spits out alot of text. Too much in fact. It acts like its trying to write the menus over and over and over. But it is handy.

Yes, in some ways even better. I was able to get a "make game and quit" command to work in Windows where it didnt for Linux. (it gave me an icon which would create a new game without having to walk thru all the same menu choices over and over)
