Targeted Rainbow - nifty!
Call me a slow learner, but Sunray_be's site (specifically the magic sites spreadsheet) inspired me to become very specific. Did you know that you can find EVERY Death gem producing site with a A2E3F1W2N3S2D4B2 pretender(not counting Holy/Unholy)? Or all the 2+ Death gem producing sites (and most of the 1s) with a A2E3W2S1D4B2? The gold sites show up for a A3F2E1W1N3B3.
It bothers me that I've created so many rainbow pretenders with a smattering of 2s and 3s without ever checking on how to optimize toward my goal. The fact that Air and Nature both have higher requirements to find gold sites than Earth and Fire shocked me. I was very suprised to find that a good Death gem searcher doesn't need ANY Nature picks. At the price of 26 for a 2 and 50 for a 3, knowing what you need before you buy just seems like such a good idea... ~Aldin [ February 18, 2004, 22:58: Message edited by: aldin ] |

SC pretenders are just too gauche for my tastes, there's no subtelty with them... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif [comment about John Kerry and SC pretenders snipped http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif ] |

LOL!!
SC pretenders... Edwards truely is that, a pretender to the throne (or nomination, take your pick http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ) Too bad really, he has a much higher electibility quotient than Kerry does, but no matter, once the money comes out I think we know what will happen to the Democratic whipping boy... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif McCain Feinstien needs more teeth, or any teeth for that matter... Cripes how I've wandered from the topic... I often do target my rainbows for specific searches, or I just stick them with 2 in any path where I want to cast the site search spell that my national mages don't get, though that's not as effective (usually) as sending them out on a searching spree, I'm really digging Caelum these days, flying rainbow searchers from turn 1... now that's a good thing (friggin Virtue has too high path costs...) |
Re: Targeted Rainbow - nifty!
For the record:
To find 75% of all magic sites, you need 2 in everything except Astral, Holy, and Unholy (3 in those). To find 90% of all magic sites, you need 3 in everything except Fire, Holy, and Unholy (2/4/4 respectively). With the 75% magic numbers, you'll be able to find 326/386 sites (85%). With the 90% magic numbers, you'll find 370/386 (96%). [ February 19, 2004, 18:16: Message edited by: Zurai ] |

I haven't looked at the site list, because I have more fun wondering and being surprised when I find something new.
Maybe IW should add and subtract a few random search requirements to many of the sites when each map is generated, to mess up such over-analysis. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif PvK |
