New units?

newbie warning

I have the demo and I am playing the "tutorial", I see the AI showing up with new units every battle, but mine never change. What should I be doing to update my troops? My giants were great early on, but now they seem to be routing to inferior troops.

The AI is probably building troops in all provinces and moving them forward. You should be able to do better by selective choice on what to build

They may also be summoning things with magic and special commanders, site abilities, and/or magic items. Conjuration and Blood magic have many summoning spells, and there are some in the other research areas as well.
