Newbie, what to download?

My copy should be arriving tommorow afternoon, so I want to gather everything so I am set to play tommmorow. However, what do I need?

1) What patch do I want? I see there is 2.08, but I saw somewhere else that it is broken and 2.06 is a better plan.

2) I have seen screens of some flag mod, that looks nice, where do I get that? Are there other mods I could get? Maybe something that has a small icon in provinces that have armies to indicate what is there (instead of the boxes under the flags).

3) I saw a link to a random map generator, but I could not get it to download. I would like to have random maps to play if the generator is cool.

4) Anything else?

2. You can get the flags mod from my site. Other mods can be gotten from either my site, or from the Illwinter mods page(s). There's a link to IW on my links page.

3. The map generator is also downloadable from my site.

2.08 is essentially better than 2.06 in every way except 1 subtheme for 1 nation (Utgard for Jotunheim). I highly recommend you use 2.08, and that you avoid playing Jotunheim/Utgard until the next patch.

Go to http://www.illwinter.com/dom2/index.html and then mods to get officially recognized mods. For the rest, just browse the forums=)

The random map generator is great if you like random maps. But the existing maps are randomized (by population, magic sites, and richness; not topologically) when a game is generated, and the existing maps look WAY better than random maps. Go to the Illwinter maps page for new maps, or try here for the rmg.

Anything else? I'm biased, but I suggest the prepatch2073 mod, which changes some unit stats... these bugs are so mild you would probably never notice them, but they can be annoying if you do.

BTW, is there an easy way to see which theme an AI Jotunheim is playing ?

I hope to crush Jotunheim in my current AAR in the next few turns and would love to upgrade to 2.08 at this time, but if Jotunheim is not using the Utgard theme anyway I could patch right now.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">I don't think there is. What I'd like to have, would be a way to force theme selection for AIs. (Of course, you always have the option of starting the game as MP, then turning all the "other" players into AIs, but I'd like to be able to do this from the start, AND not get any information on the AIs)

For the moment, I'm avoiding Jotunheim AIs in my current games, precisely because of the Utgard bug. Come to think of it - I started a World game recently, and forgot to turn them off. They aren't in the first 3 dead AI, though (Mictlan, Pythium, and Machaka - I was only at war with Machaka, though), so maybe they were lucky and didn't pick the friendly heat radiating theme...

Potatoman's Ashikaga mod's rather fun, and you may be interested in apoger's assorted scale mods. I normally have his Luck scale mod enabled, along with the official Magic Duel mod, Saber Cherry's 'pre-patch unit-fix' mod, and Unwise's flag mod.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Unfortunately not. There is an easy way to avoid getting the broken Jotunheim them when you start a new game, though, by making a copy of the map you are playing, changing it to a scenario (with a slightly different name, so you can distinguish it from the original), and forcing a specific theme on the Jotunheim player.
