Dominion Chess

So I was playing chess with my brother Last night (and losing pretty badly) and I said in desperation that my king defeats his king by force of dominion... then that got me thinking, what if you DID combine chess with Dominions? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif

So the king would be the Pretender, of course... he could be captured like any other piece, and could be called back to his home square by bishops (priests) or any piece appointed as a prophet... you'd only win by either eliminating the opponent's entire army or eliminating his dominion... dominion would be represented by placing a checker (draughtsman) of your color on a square (only 3 levels of dominion: +1, 0, -1 for simplicity & to avoid running out of checkers http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif )... kings, bishops, and prophets would spread dominion to the square they are in and any adjacent square - or maybe any square they could move to, to spice things up a bit... bishops and prophets could preach to extend their radius of influence... you could even make the knights blood mages and let them sacrifice an adjacent pawn or sacrifice several to summon back a dead piece... anyone interested in developing this further? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

You would have to have 17 sets of pieces to choose your two to play with each game.

Ermor would have a never ending supply of pawns.

Re: Dominion Chess

If I had any spare time I'd love to develop it with you ;-)

I think you'd have to keep it to just 2 equivalent nations, or else it would rapidly stop being anything chess-like and would just become simplified dominions. Although, you could have every nation have a single, (balanced!) special ability. Ermor gets a free pawn every couple turns, marignon spreads dominion faster, Vanheim moves faster (to simulate their sailing), abysia can sacrifice pawns to summon knights.

You could also have minor special abilities for kings, to simulate choosing different pretenders.

If someone could come up with a way to implement it Online (something web-based), I'd be into spending some time hammering out a balanced and fun rule system.
