Newbie question about province defenses
Hello !
I'm a french player. I got the game for 2 weeks, and I have a little (and stupid http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif )question : Do you use province defenses ? It costs a lot and seems useless against "medium" armies. If you use it, do you set it to 20 ? Or more ? |
Re: Newbie question about province defenses
Province defences are essential IMHO. In MP, you can very easily lose all your undefended provinces to stealthy scouts/units. There are a number of spells that attack provinces with small armies, so defend your valuable provinces ! The numbers to use depend on the nation involved as some PD's are a lot more useful than others. 21 gets you the extra leader. I've learned from bitter experience about this http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: Newbie question about province defenses
Ok thanks !!
But what is the best choice ? Spend 200+ gold to increase province defense, or recruit a general and some creatures for the same task ? |
Re: Newbie question about province defenses
A commander with troops surely seems a good choice, but as fas as I can recall now, ProvinceDefence has two advantages:
1. They dont mess up the map. 2. They do not consume supplies & upkeep! So save yourself some money by buying PD! |
Re: Newbie question about province defenses
I think PD is also very important in Single Player game, as the AI often gets ridicolous amounts of units, far more than you could have by that time, and floods your provinces.
Your main army cant be everywhere, so you have to rely on pd to at least hurt the enemy so much he needs to reinforce before he advances. My best result was with 41 pd Ulm against Ermor. Nearly 200 killed, battle won. Another thing to consider is that you dont need to rebuild your pd as long as you win. This is a huge advantage to your main army, where every dead soldier needs to be replaced. Just make sure your pd wins. |

Merci mon grand !! Eh ouais je me suis mis à Dom 2 il y a peu.
I'm interested in Pbeming, but I think I'm to weak (I won 0 game http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif ) up to now http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif . Maybe in a few weeks ? [ March 10, 2004, 15:11: Message edited by: chtronk ] |
Re: Newbie question about province defenses
Here's a question to add to the list about PD:
Does increased PD have any effect on the unrest level? Will it decrease unrest or do I need an active army with a leader set to Patrol to take care of it? |

I'm the same PDF (my initials) that wrote the Dom2 review in Pc4War ! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif About pbem don't hesitate, you'll learn much more in 1 pbem game than 25 solo ones. And our pbem have a cool pace (2-5 turns/weeks) and let you time to improve in the meantime ... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif |
Re: Newbie question about province defenses
As Ashen Empire or Soul Gate, having a single point is useful to ensure that you have a commander on the premises. Otherwise, auto-recruited troops attacked without a leader will rout or fall apart.
For/against others, it varies. Against Pan or Caelum or anybody else making free use of fliers, PD by itself is very vulnerable because the PD does not put guards on the commanders. PD does not affect unrest, I think. At 10+ or so (11?) it has a chance of catching stealthy units (not a very good one, at least for spies), which can be useful. |
